How can we stop 'space bar' hotkey? This marks the task as Complete

I have lost count of the number of tasks that I have failed to complete because I have previously accidentally marked as complete by simply pressing the space bar. This is a major fail in an otherwise great product! It makes me nervous when using the desktop client and is unnerving.

I see no way to re-assign the complete task shortcut (indeed I don't even see it listed in the hotkeys so I found the reason for my 'missing' tasks by accident!).

I have also tried to assign space bar to another activity but that is not allowed.

I use very few of the short cuts / hotkeys in MLO and would happily disable ALL hotkeys if I can't find a way to stop this annoying behaviour. I can't find how to disable hotkeys either.

I have Autohotkey installed but I can't even think of a way of using this to stop this annoying and dangerous behaviour.

Does anyone have any solutions or share my frustration?

thank you

Steve

Hi Steve,

Using AHK you can toggle the spacebar on/off, which would allow you to quickly revert to using it for text entry.

Try the following script (which uses the ScrollLock key to toggle) : -

ScrollLock::Hotkey, Space, Toggle
Space::
MsgBox Space key is disabled. Press ScrollLock to enable.
Return

Thanks Pottster

that certainly works as described and has taught me a useful technique for Autohotkey. Unfortunately I am still too careless when I'm editing and adding tasks. Particularly on my laptop.

I am also looking for a solution to this problem. There must be a way! Please keep us posted.

Wow, so glad I saw this!  I kept wondering why sometimes tasks would be marked complete even though I never clicked the checkbox - it was very troublesome and one of the main reasons I almost gave up on MLO.  Now I know hitting the space bar is the reason for that (which I do to bring my computer out of screensaver mode).  I would also like a way to turn this off but knowing that's the reason is at least a start!

I always use Shift or CTRL to bring my PC back from standby. I see many people use the 'enter' key and I worry every time.
To be fair, Windows should be clever enough to ignore the key press when the screen is not visible but we're stuck with it.

Only a Scot could use a word like shoogle! Never heard of it before, thanks. I thought it was a search engine for footwear ;-)

As far as I can determine this is a bug, or at very least an omission.

Having the ability to configure the hot keys and then having a hot key that can't be configured is clearly wrong.

I don't think this has been a specific issue for me personally (as far as I'm aware), but I can see why it could cause vanishing tasks if you accidentally hit space.
