I can see where that would get confusing. Hint for next time, minimize (rather than hiding) the sections you dont use, and move them all to the bottom. That keeps them pretty much out of your way, but makes it harder to forget that they are there.

My mistake was that in an attempt to clean up the somewhat overwhelming amount of power/detail of MLO that had gone into Tools/Options/Appearance and turned off 'Effort'. And then mistakenly thought the Project 'Time Required' was 'Effort'.

under "properties" in the right sidebar find the "effort" section. For me it's all the way at the bottom. Fill in the min time and max time fields with the appropriate amounts of time in minutes or hours. You can do this for each task under a project and also for the project item itself. The time required for the project, in the "project" section of the project item's properties, will be the sum of the min and max effort time in the project and all of its subtasks.
