Hello,

following instructions detailed in "How to request new MLO features" I
start this post. I would very much appreciate your comments and thumbs-
up since the implementation of new features seems to be rather
dependent on how much people welcome the idea.

I don't know if this has been asked before (are you finally using
UserVoice.com ????) but it would soo much help if a drop down window
could show the existing contexts while new tasks is entered in the
outline window...

Thanks a lot in advance,

Marc

If you have the Context column visible, you can right click and it
will show the complete list of contexts for you to choose. Is that
what you wanted?

Not really... I want a drop down list with all my existing contexts
(my GTD contexts start with @ and my Person context start with #) to
appear while I'm typing a new task in the outline view (before
pressing alt+enter). It is soooooooooooo painful having to retype my
contexts for every new tasks in the outline view. I don't want to let
go of the mouse, MLO is great because it is really fast... I could
actually disconnect my usb mouse because I do my best to go mouseless
when using mlo.

Andrey, this has not been implemented right?? this would add soooo
much power to mlo...

Thanks,

Eberhard

maybe two potential workarounds for you

(a) you could simply assign keyboard shortcuts to each context

(b) independently from that... I myself have set-up a list of contexts
in my MLO outline, and just assign new tasks to one of the existing
branches. The moment I'm doing this, MLO is asking me whether it
should assign the context of the new parent or not

For me it's actually pretty simple to handle my contexts
"automatically"

Hello Eberhard,

thanks a lot for your suggestions, it's always handy learning from
others' experience :)

Regarding a), I have too many contexts to tackle this problem by
assigning shortcuts, specially the personal contexts... I have one
contexts for each person I interact with and the list is pretty
dynamic...

Regarding b) I think I understood how you use mlo and of course if you
have a group of branches for each context, by moving next actions into
those groups and inheriting the context from the parent you may be
good to go. That is not the case for me though...

Remember the milk, the other task manager I have used in the past has
implemented the feature I'm requesting here and it does help a lot.
Maybe I'm overlooking something here and it has already been
implemented as far as I know with mlo one has to type every context
over and over again for every new item/task being introduced and that
sort of slowes me down a lot.

Thanks a ligand I look forward to your opinions and workarounds.

Regards

marc

I don't understand why you are typing the context.  Is it because not enough show up in the pull down menu?

Do you see the menu?  If not, add the column "Context" to your Outline view.  Then right-click in this field for your new task - there should be a menu of contexts.

I do see a defect, though, that when I have more Contexts than what fits on the screen it doesn't scroll.  Otherwise, it works great.  You can even type the first letter and it will find the first context that starts with that letter.

Ah, in reading your other message you don't want to use the mouse.  Perhaps what is needed (and easy to implement perhaps) is for MLO to allow us to Tab over to the Contexts column and set it, when entering a new task.

I still think using the pulldown is quite quick...

Lisa

Or does this work for you:  hit Alt C and you get a pop up list of Contexts in the Context field on the Properties pane.  Start typing the name of your context and it progressively matches to what you are typing.   Sounds to me like an exact match to your requirement.    :-)

You can also select multiple tasks and assign a single context to all these tasks.

Thabks Lisa and Richard,

what you suggest is no doubt a method for overcomming what for me is
something that can be still evolved. I've been switching back and
forth between remember the milk and mlo over the years of trying to
implement gtd and what I talk here is a feature that has been recently
added to the RTM recently and I quote:

" How do I use Smart Add?
Below are details on each of the task properties, and how you can
include them when you add a task. Many of the properties have an auto-
suggest feature for quick access to your existing tags, lists,
locations, etc. Can't remember all the symbols? No problem! In the web
app, click on the help icon to the right of the "Add Task" field to
access a handy cheat sheet."

i knew about the shortcut and though it's fast (mlo is really fast) I
don't feel confortable using it and I stubornly think that this auto-
suggest improvement could be extremely helpful and would increase the
speed of imputing info into mlo.

I tried to find a YouTube video for you guys to help me male my point
but didn't manage to find one... Let me know if this clarifies my
needs a little more.

Thanks a lot for your time!!!

Hugs :)

The quoted info can be understood best by reading the whole article

the snapshots are very self- explanatory

I can see it being useful to type @ and see the contexts pop up, though Alt-C is really not much harder in the meantime.
