Is this product still being developed? I looked at the change log and nothing for well over 6 months...

Not necessarily a bad thing if the software is rock solid, bug free, and has a good user base....How many people use this? Seems kind of expensive, then $10 more for the mobile version....on the fence....

Any opinions....?

Hi, Lifer

There are many task list managers available for less. MLO has functionality in many areas that goes far beyond what’s available (or even better, what works) in the less expensive products. If you need any of the advanced features MLO is the right choice.

I don’t know how many users there are on Windows or iPhone/iPad, but Google Play says that there are 100,00-500,00 users on Android

Yes, development is under way for Windows with a major 4.0 release in the works. There’s no information that I know of, yet, regarding when 4.0 will be released or what upgrade cost if any there will be.

Thanks for the info - yeah, I hate to buy it now, only to have to pay for an upgrade when it comes out ;-)

Thanks again!

I suspect you won't have to pay for the upgrade. Andrey has been pretty decent in the past.

Caveat Emptor - this is a personal opinion.

Cheers

It's definitely still being developed but I get the impression that the team is pretty small so one or two platforms are the focus at once.

The 4.0 interface has been discussed on the forums and it seems like a tabbed interface (rather than just the two tabs now) and addition of hierarchical filters will be added, among other things. But the core functionality is very complex and rich feature-wise already, which is why focus is on mobile platforms at the moment. I'd say buy now -- it will probably take you that long to feel you want to learn any new features :)

Dear Lifer,

I'd second the statements already made by Dwight and Lisa. a Desktop Version 4.0 is obviously under development, but no release date published yet.

What I can say though ... I'm using MLO for already more than 6 years and I'd confirm, it's very solid and stable, very feature-rich, and it offers a functionality I still didn't find something else.

Even from here ... recommendation to buy.

Hello Lifer,

thank you so much for posting this question! Believe it or not, I am exactly in the same spot and also hesitant to buy now. My main concern is the trouble with wifi sync and, of course, the pending major update.
I hate to sound like the Grinch but money really is an issue at the time being and the past upgrades ranged at about 20 Dollars *if* I remember correctly.

I still dont know what to do; this list and the other (for android) is very active though and many of these people here are very, very helpful. So the community is both friendly and supportive, - that is very important for me when buying software (especially a program that is not so easy to master).

I would like to throw in another question that is directly related to the purchase:
I am not sure if I do need android pro or not. Lets say, I would like to sync at least one way; so I have android tasks in my desktop application. I am not sure if I need the pro version for android or not? And I think I remember a couple of weeks ago I saw a bundle of MLO pro (desktop) plus android license - was this changed or did I miss it on the purchase page?

Many thanks for being a supportive user group :-)

Have a great weekend
Brienne

Hi, Brienne. The Pro version of MLO for Android gives you access to some advanced functionality, like creating recurrent tasks, the nearby and projects views, etc. The free version is totally usable and you can sync with your desktop for free using wifi sync.

When you first download MLO to your phone you start a trial period in which you can use the pro features for free. The trial lasts a limited time, I don’t remember how long (maybe a month) but it shows you how long you have left and gives reminders as the end gets close. During the trial, the free Pro features are flagged so you should notice when you use them. If, during the trial, you discover that the Pro features are useful to you and are worth the cost, you should buy a Pro license. If you don’t, at the end of the trial period the pro features will be disabled, but the free features are powerful enough that MLO on the phone remains a usable and useful tool.

Thank you Dwight, your reply cleared up some of the questions I had! Will look further into it right away.

Brienne

On Windows, I'm pretty sure you cannot sync with anything except the Pro Windows software. I also thought you had to have a Pro license for Android to use Wi-Fi sync, but I could be mistaken.  You can, however, use cloud with the free Android version (but Cloud has a cost).

These days, it's becoming more rare for software to have a one-time fee for the software and many are going to a "per year" model which drives me crazy.(One software that we paid for - Keeper for managing passwords - took away the ability to sync with their Android app from the paid version -- which is what I paid for it for, forcing people to go to a subscription model if they wanted sync. I'm still angry!)

I do understand that money can be tight, but I also think it's reasonable for developers to charge for upgrades -- as long as they continue to support older versions for quite a while afterwards so people only have to upgrade if they want the new features, not be forced to upgrade for the previous software to work.  (I would strongly encourage the developers to support MLO 3 syncing with upgraded mobile devices for at least a year after MLO 4 comes out, since mobile apps update automatically or with less user control).

Hi Lisa,
thank you for your input. Surely major upgrades very often do cost a fee and developers do have a right to ask for it. But the whole point with the current situation with MLO is, that the major upgrade seems to be likely some time soon. I understand there is no word from the developer on the time frame so hence my insecurity about the purchase. It would be more than generous if there was a "free upgrade time frame" for recent new customers like someone earlier suggested on this topic, only I do not want to count on it to happen.

With that wifi synch from android I really need to look into it now - it makes sense what you said, but I also do not know!

Have a nice evening,

Brienne

some more input:
i've been using MLO for years and years now, and indeed there's no software like it. basically, whatever todosystem you want to follow, you can configure it in MLO. You can configure an infinite amount of views of your todolist, based on combinations of several criteria. E.g. a way I use it: through rapid task entry (a keyboard shortcut) I enter stuff that i need to discuss with different team members. by adding e.g. -fltom (flag tom), the item will popup, together with a miniature picture of tom, in the view that sorts todos on the basis of team members. that way when i sit together with someone, i just look at that view and see everything flagged with tom. just one example.
AND all this is extremely lightweight.

there is a disadvantage to it not being webbased, which is that it's harder to use it for teamwork or share things with others. teamwork is possible, but i've never been able to work it flawlessly. (a My Team Organized would be the best :-)

good luck choosing
tobias
