When I opened MLO for the very first time, I was confronted with template choices which I didn't expect.  I have tried to find out more about them in the user guide, but can't find anything.  What are they, and how do they affect how I use MLO going forward??

Hello Don,

They're just ideas for how you might want to organise your tasks, but I imagine you'll end up with a system that works for you and isn't exactly how any of those templates look.

As an example, my own system is a hybrid of Steven Covey's "7 habits" and Richard Allen's GTD (Getting Things Done).

So, I tend to have a folder for each area of my life (personal, home, work and community), with a subfolder for each of my roles (in work: design engineer, technical lead, bidding; in home: husband, father, family, earning, home maintenance, etc). Under each role I'll have projects with sub-projects and tasks.

I then tag tasks with contexts which fit with the GTD definitions - @calls, @computer, @errand, @home, @office, @site, etc.

That way I can zoom in to a particular area of my life or project. I can also use a flat view to organise my tasks by context and, for example, clear a group of calls or all my errands at the same time.

I put contact names in the task notes. That way I can use a text filter to look at all the things I delecated or need to discuss with Rick or Neil (for example) as a list together.

That's what works for me. Your system might end up being entirely different. The templates (along with books like the above two) may be a source of ideas or inspiratikn for developing your personal system. I hope it goes well.

Good question Don. I had the same thoughts when I started. I chose MLO to support my GTD 'habit' and chose the GTD but, even now, I'm not sure how much of my configuration is based on the template, how much is native MLO and how much is my configuration..

I followed some guidance on this forum from someone whou used the goals and stars to identify a time scale / priority for instance.

My system is a bit of each I suppose. It's not ideal, and I need to simplify I think. I'd almost like to start again so that I could understand my set up better!

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving MLO and it works well for me. I just think I've messed around with it too much and confused myself!

Thanks to all.  It seems that when I paid for the standard version, I downloaded the Pro version.  I don't see the templates in the standard version.

Here's my use model (probably has changed some since I wrote it) which may be what Steve is referring to. Use what works, modify the rest!

(Yes, still planning to write a book one of these days but life has been taken over with other things currently...)

Thanks Lisa,
yes http://stroyan.net/lisasblog/2012/mylifeorganized/ is the system I referred to. I've re-read the article and it is still the best implementation I've seen. It fits in with the way that I work. I think I have to accept the fact that my Weekly review just isn't going to happen. This system helps you review your tasks regularly within the context of related tasks. I just need to be more disciplined!
