Thanks to Dwight, I'm now able to explain you :

you can have rules with AND and OR
you can have groups of subrules that are AND and OR each other
the subrules can have AND and OR each other

the magic point is : if you want to create an group, first create a rule with nothing but the AND or the OR relative to other group or other singles rules.

In your case, you set:

- Blank rule AND
       - Starred OR
       - StartDateTime in next 3 days OR
       - DueDateTime in next 3 days
- Completed is False

Thus, there are 2 rules : the complete state AND the blank rule groups.
This blank rules group has 2 subrules : startdate OR duedate

Can you combine OR + AND filters in an Advanced Filter? I need to show tasks that are starred, due in the next 3 days or starting in the next three days--excluding completed tasks. Selecting "Active" as a filter removes completed tasks, but also removes other tasks that I need to see. I tried several combinations of AND + OR, but none of them worked--completed tasks were still shown. I might not have the rules in the right order?

Here are the rules without something to filter out completed tasks:
Starred OR
StartDateTime in next 3 days OR
DueDateTime in next 3 days

Thanks. That technique worked great, except I had to un-check the top-level AND condition for the filter to work. Otherwise the to-do list was filtering out tasks that should be visible. Here's what I wound up with; is it wrong? X = rule is checked.

   Blank rule AND
         X  Starred OR
X  StartDateTime in next 3 days OR
X  DueDateTime in next 3 days
Completed is False

I have no idea about checking it or not.
If you chek-it, the rule wil be:
(starred OR start OR due) AND uncompleted
Didn't you want it to be:
(starred AND (start OR due)) AND uncompleted ?

I thought that not checking the toplevel rule will turn off all
subrules. I could be wrong, but I think you have just "Completed is
False"

Perhaps the ones you want visible are ones with no Start/Due date?
This filter will not catch those because neither of the date
conditions will be met, even though philosophically an undated task is
already started.

You would need to add an "AND" "exists" clause as a subrule under each
date clause, or add two more "OR" clauses at the same level as your
date clauses.

Actually, unchecking the top AND box did not remove the sub-filters. When AND is checked, only 5 tasks appear, which is not correct. When it is not checked, I see around 20 tasks that are either starred and/or start/due dates within 3 days of today. It also shows overdue tasks. Weird. Mayne it's a bug?

I do not want tasks with no start date. The filter is designed to be a list of potential tasks that I will tackle today.

Wayne, if you want more help with this, I suggest the following:

1.       Check every line in your rules listing

2.       Take a screen shot of the rules listing with all rules checked

3.       Take a screen shot of the task list that you results – be sure that the following are visible: completion checkbox, starred, start date, end date

4.       Post a reply to this forum explaining which tasks that are in the listing shouldn’t be, and why, and describing the tasks that are not shown but should be, specifying what the completion, star, start and due are for each. Attach your screen shots.

My opinion is that the only time you need to create a rule and uncheck it, is if you have a rule that you no longer want, but might want again in the future. But maybe I’m wrong – I look forward to playing with your rules.

Missising:

Rules:

Here are screenshots of the filter, results and the two tasks that are not included in the resulting list. The filter is designed to show only not-completed tasks that are either: starred or start/due dates earlier than 3 days from now (this includes past dates). It's a "do today" list.

I confirmed that everything that should be in the filtered list is there, with the two exceptions in the screenshots. I removed parts of titles for privacy reasons.
