Tasks disappear from Starred view if they have child tasks.

Hello

If I have a task (call it TaskA) which I have starred, if I happen to add a sub-task (call it TaskB), then Task A disappears from my Starred report(s).

It there any way to stop this from happening?

i.e. I would like for any (task or project) that has one or more sub-task 'children' to still appear in my Starred tasks view.

I simply put, I would like to see a view that contains every row that has been starred.

In the view definition,  the first filter is Show Actions. What value do you have selected? If it's "active" then this is happening because a task that has uncompleted subtasks is by definition inactive,  try a different action filter,  like  All or Available

To answer my own question, it turns out that part of my problem is that "Active" means according to MLO  "the task must not have subtasks or these subtasks should be completed ".

I hadn't realised that - thought the whole tree was Active.

OK now I get it. The only reason why my default "All Active tasks" view is showing everything I want is because the filter field "Show Heirachy" is ticked. And the actual "Active" tasks are all those ones at the furthest places down the tree structure.

And if I star part of the hierarchy it fails to appear because it is not "Active"

So if in Filter under General, I change Show Actions, to "All" instead of "Active", then so long as I haven't gone and starred anything in my other lists (e.g. "Sometime Maybe") then I will get what I want.

I just rediscovered the "Show Hierarchy" (Y/N) option which is great. I shall now experiment with using both!

Don't overlook the [Config] button to the right of Show Hierarchy. You might find it useful,  for example, to set a parent filter that includes parents only if they are starred.

Caution: filtered hierarchies can be confusing. For example,  if you show starred tasks and their starred parents, and a starred task has an unstarred parent and a starred grandparent,  the parent will be shown to protect the integrity of the hierarchy even though that seems to violate the parent filter.  Also, if your filter produces overlapping subtrees they will be merged which can produce confusing results until you figure out what's happening.

Thanks.

Ok new problem. I put things into the future quite a lot e.g. using hotkey "Alt/S" followed by "2H" so that it disappears for 2 hours.

That aspect of what it means to be "Active" was helpful for me. But now with "All" actions showing these tasks are not disappearing.

In Advanced rules I already have "Starred is true" so I added AND  "StartDateTime" - "on or before" - "now",
however the result is that items that do now have a Start Date set are removed!
(Fwiw, "now" appears to be undocumented... but seems to work )

What I need is
"Starred is true" AND
( "StartDateTime" - "on or before" - "now",  OR
"StartDateTime" - "does not exist"  )

However I can't work out how to put the brackets in !

Before we start this new subject let's be totally clear that MLO's approach to Boolean grouping is insufferably arcane and tedious. There's no excuse for such a difficult interface, except perhaps that no one except the hopeless geeks will even try to use it. The whole thing feels as though it was designed in 1963. So John, please don't feel as though you need to convince me that it could be improved.

I'm going to describe this in small steps. I know that you know much of this already but I'm also writing this for future readers who stumbl onto this post.

In the Setup Advanced Filtering window
1. hit the Add Rule button
2. Fill in the fields, [starred] [is false] [and]
3. hit the Add Rule button again. The first rule collapses to "(starred) AND"
4. Do Not Enter Any Fields In The New (second) Rule!!!
5. Hit the Add Subrule button. The second rule collapses to ">"
6. Fill in the fields in the first subrule, [StartDateTime] [OnOrBefore] [Now] [Or

7. Hit the Add Rule button. Maybe you would like to hit Add Subrule but that would be incorrect. Thefirst subrule collapses without much change.
8. Fill in the fields in the second subrule [startDateTime] [does not exist]. Ignore the trailing conjunction, it's nugatory.
9. Hit the [-] button before the second (empty) rule. The two subrules collapse to "((StartDateTime on or beforeNow) OR (StartDateTime does not exist))"

Voila, there are your brackets.

BTW Now is an undocumented but supported variable. You can make it even more valuable by doing math with it. For example, to see all the tasks that you have postponed for two hours, try
((StartDateTime on or after Now) AND (StartDateTime on or before Now + 2H))

Just one small point:

> 2. Fill in the fields, [starred] [is false] [and]
should surely read:
> 2. Fill in the fields, [starred] [is true] [and]

Otherwise... Brilliant! (as ever)

Re the usability of the interface I caught myself saying out loud
"You have got to be joking.  Un bl**dy believable."
and
"You practically need to do a PhD on it to work it out."

Many thanks
