Hi Andrey,

Thanks for developing a wonderful application that is very versatile.
I've been using it for the GTD time management system but now I want
to switch to using the "Master Your (Workday) Now!" (MYN) time
management system instead because it's so simple and natural so it has
a very very short learning curve. Unfortunately, I can't figure out
how to setup MLO to use the MYN system so that the tasks are
automatically filtered into the "Active Actions" View based on the
Start Date and Due Date. Depending on the Start Date and Due Date the
task should show up in different categories within the "Active
Actions" View. The different categories based on their Start and Due
Dates are as follows:

Critical Now, Opportunity Now, Over-The-Horizon (OTH), Target Now and
Significant Outcomes (SOCs).

These categories are described in detailed at the end of this message.
If possible, could you please add a Template for the MYN time
management system so we can use MLO with this system. Thousands of
people use the MYN system so I think that it will be a very welcome
addition to the list of templates you provide. Thank you very much and
we are hoping that this template will manifest sometime soon.

Regards,
Peter

Here is a summary of the system from the Quick Start Guide they give
for free at http://masteryourworkday.com/tooldownloads

Enter all tasks on Now Tasks list; no exceptions. Especially enter tasks arriving by e-
mail.

On the Now Tasks template:

Enter items on the Critical Now section that must done today. Use the “going home test”—
if you would not work late into the night if this task were incomplete, do not record it there. Review this list hourly.

Enter items on the Opportunity Now section that you would like to do it today or this week, maybe even next week. Review the entire list at least once each day. Keep this list to 20 or fewer items. If it gets longer, move lowest priority to the Over-
the-Horizon list.

Enter items on the Over-the-
Horizon (OTH) section that you do not need to pay attention to until next week or later. Review this entire list once a week.

Enter items on the optional Target Now list that you’d very much like to do today (but would not work late to complete). Once Critical Now items are done, review this list hourly. Revise this list at the start of each day.

Enter items on the optional Review Cycle pages in the Over-the-
Horizon (OTH) section if your weekly  OTH list is getting too large to review easily in one sitting.

Broader outcomes and deliverables for the week enter on the Significant Outcomes (SOCs) section. There should only be one to three of these each week. Glance at this list each time you start working on tasks to ensure you choose tasks that help reach your weekly outcomes.

Hi Peter,

I think if you want a MYN template, perhaps a better option would be to have us help you how to implement the use model you want inside MLO, and play with it for a while, so you (who know the system) can decide the best way to have the template work and submit it for inclusion in MLO. Having someone that doesn't really understand a methodology and has never worked with it, create a template might not make you very happy :)

The reason I say this is that there are lots of features in MLO that could be used to support this, and they have different advantages / disadvantages and only someone familiar with the system will know which fit best.  You can use tree structure, start/due, goals, starred, contexts, flags, custom views, etc.

Don't limit yourself to the active actions list at all.  It is very easy to create views that show tasks that really start tomorrow, for example on your OTH list.

Have you discovered how to create new views and create advanced criteria for your views, yet?    I would suggest you create a separate view (at least for now) for a couple of your different categories. So you might specify something like, "Context contains XXX AND start-date is less than one week".

When you create a new view, look at the differences between Active, Available, and All.  I often start new views with "All", then add criteria to exclude Folders, completed tasks, etc.

I would suggest you consider how Contexts (which are very customizable) might help.  Flags might be another thing to consider, though they are not on Android if that makes a difference.  How you structure the tree is another choice that has an impact. Starred is nice for narrowing the field quickly/on the fly. Goals can be used as just another feature, so for example Monthly goal could be used to mean something a little different than month, though if you were distributing the template to others it could feel kludgy.

Then whichever of these features you use, you can create a view to filter down to the correct set of tasks.

One thing that might be an issue, is that I don't think templates include a new set of customized views....but if they don't that would be a great feature request.

Play with it and ask lots of questions :)

i also recently finished the MYN book and started thinking about that system.  Have been GTD advocate for a while now.  However what i came up with in my mind anyway is to simply combine the two.  I cannot run my life in 3 views (now, this week, over the horizon) anymore that i can run my life with 6-8 @contexts.  however i can easily and have been running my life using contexts and "horizion" type views

my @ Office context are the things i must do today, that i wouldn't go home until they are done
my @ this week context are the things that i would like to do this week or next
my @ projects context is for anything i want to park until it's time to act...consider it over the horizon and someday/maybe combined.

my tasks are do subtasks in order where appropriate and my todo view is sorted by context.  i can just look at "all" in the todo view or i can look at the category i want to look at individually.  just a thought.......

Thank you very much for your replies. I was not very familiar with
customized views but now thanks to you all I have created my own views
for each category, OTH etc, and I'm playing with combining the context
from GTD with the simplicity of the MYN system. It will take a little
fiddling with to get it just right. Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
Peter

You're very welcome! I'd love it if you could let us know what you work out, and whether you find it more intuitive/effective than GTD.
