INS key for new task doesn't work. Neither does alt + INS

Hi guys,

Just wondering if you have run into this problem. I haven't used MLO in a few months and got back to it today. I realised I couldn't use the INS keys and have to select using mouse which needless to say is very tedious. Anyone know what might be the problem and how to fix it?

I checked out the hot key assignments and I see that is was assigned to the INS key on my numeric keypad. So it's listed as "0" for new task and "alt + 0" for my subtask. Yet this still does not work whether with num lock on or off. 

For some reason my INS key in the centre of the keyboard (the one bunched with delete, home, end, page up, page down) doesn't seem to work. (The other keys here do work though, e.g. pgup pgdn).

Anyone have some advice on what's happening here and how to rectify? The old version of MLO had no issues with this.

I had this kind of problem on Microsoft Surface keyboards. I changed the hotkeys to Alt-I and Alt-Shift-I. What I would really like is for Redo to ascribed to Ctrl-Y as is usual.

It's not a problem on my Dell laptop. MLO is honouring the hotkey assignments I've given it, including Ins or Alt+Ins for new task or subtask. If that doesn't work for you, maybe you should try resetting the hotkey assignments to default (there's a button for that under Tools-Options-Hotkeys) and then re-assigning them all?

There is no Ins key on Microsoft Surface Pro! Hence Alt-I remapping. However that does not work for editing contexts, so there I have to resort to the right click menu.

Assuming we are talking about a vanilla PC, sounds like your keyboard codes have changed. This can happen with a new application, a new keyboard (or any input device), or at the OS level.

Even though my hotkey is set to "Num 0" my independent INS key works fine too.  This is a full size keyboard.

If your INS key is in the middle of the keyboard you probably need to hold some kind of modifier key with it.  On most Dells I've seen, for example, the INS would be written in blue and there's a blue 'Fn' key near the left shift or alt keys at the bottom of the keyboard.  Some other keyboards (Lenovo maybe?) do it in orange color.   You'd need this same combo to make the pg up, pg down, delete, etc work anywhere.

Check and make sure if that's your issue.

If you know that combo already (Fn+Ins) and that's what you've been trying that doesn't work then go in your shortcut assignments in MLO and go to the Insert Task action and assign/modify the shortcut entering that key combo.  It may be a different code (internal scan code) from a std INS key and that may fix you.

Good point, zel... It could be something like a display control (eg screen rotation) shortcut over-writing the MLO shortcut.

Thank you so much for all your generous responses. I have tried your suggestions and I'm convinced that maybe my INS key just isn't working. Because when I try the INS key on MS Word (after enabling overtype mode) it also doesn't work. Interestingly, everything else in that same centre block (delete, home, end, page up, page down) does work. So maybe I just got unlucky with the keyboards.

In the end, I found what worked best for me was to us Alt+I = Insert and Shift + alt+ I = Insert child. Thanks to Laurence Glazier for that suggestion!

Once again thanks for all your help guys. I recently came back to MLO and there's a lot to learn/ relearn, so every little bit of advice helps!
