Hi Andrey,

Only major feature request:
Sync to the Cloud.

I have numerous PocketPCs, BlackBerries, and iPhones which some have
MLO installed. It’s the biggest hassle to always find the right cradle
to sync your device to the desktop. If there was a way to store our
master MLO file in the cloud and then have all devices sync from
there, you’d have the ultimate product and also simplify things
greatly for many of your users. Each device and has PC has a local
copy of the file when online access is not available.

On my BlackBerry, I’m using a product called ToDoMatrix from www.rexwireless.com.
All data is backed up into the cloud and also synced there. If you
lose your phone or your laptop, the data is still there in the cloud.
Of course a local copy is kept for when online access is not
available.

Not sure how other users would feel, but I would have no problem
paying for this syncing/hosting subscription.

Keep up the great work.

Second that request - think I've mentioned it before on the iPhone group.

Hi Bryan,

I've been doing this with DropBox for quite a while now which is a
great product... as I have multiple PC's and does exactly what you are
saying.

How I'm doing it is this:
1) Store the .ML file in the DropBox folder (anything in this local
folder is backed up to the cloud).
2) Make a copy of this .ML file outside the DropBox folder somewhere
on the local machine - and this is the one you open.
3) Setup a MLO sync between this local file and the version of the
file in the DropBox folder (for each machine).
4) When each machine syncs, they all sync with the single copy in the
shared DropBox folder.

Works pretty well however I have noticed that sometimes the MLO sync
isn't flawless. Another option I guess would be to open directly from
the dropbox folder which has the benefit of not having to hit F9 in
MLO to do syncing between the machines. However, the danger is in this
case is if you have MLO open in multiple locations all using the
same .ML file in the DropBox folder, DropBox may have sync / conflict
issues since it is being edited in more than one place at once.

You can sign up for DropBox using my referral here if you wish:

There is also a DropBox app for the iPhone which is pretty nice...!

Actually totally doesn't answer your question come to think of it
sorry since you were talking mainly about mobile devices it seems, not
other PC's.

Would be nice if the iPhone version when it comes out could somehow
sync with the drop box file too.
Definitely agree syncing over the cloud would be the way to go.

Why do you have so many devices? How can you get anything done with
so many devices? Seems more confusing han productive. I think your
case is the exception not the rule. Your average person will have one
mobile device.

I agree that some people need cloud syncing, but it has to be an
option among desktop syncing, but not the only option. I for one
would never want my list in the cloud on some one elses server. I
hate advertisements, I dont want to pay a subscription to access my
data, and I dont want to rely on someone elses server to be up or my
connection to be up. The argument that you can access your data
anywhere list anywhere is silly, I think, because you can do that
anyway with your mobile device (Isnt that why you purchased the mobile
version in the first place?) anyway. WHen I am at a computer, I plug
my phone in, when Iam away, I have my phone therefore I always have a
working up to date copy of my list.

I wouldnt mind wireless syncing, but not cloud syncing.

+1. Cloud is fine for many, but other solutions are needed as well. Will your clients accept less than secure data?

Hi Conrad,

As the IT director of our company I test and use many devices to see
what is best for employees. Additionally, I'm on the road for half the
year both in Asia and Europe. I have basically 3 SIM cards for the 3
phones (one each for Asia, Europe and US).

I also once thought that desktop syncing was sufficient but after
using ToDoMatrix from RexWireless on the BlackBerry, I never want to
go back to desktop syncing if possible. It is so much easier and more
natural than desktop syncing. I'm on the go constantly and can't
afford to keep putting my phone in and out of the cradle just to keep
things in sync. I can put in an important note or number on my laptop
right before boarding a flight and then be guaranteed the data is on
my cellphone. Trying carrying and syncing your phone while rushing
through a terminal. I agree that having cloud syncing should not be
the only option available but I think it would be the most flexible
one.

From a developer perspective, imagine not having to learn the
peculiarities of each mobile platform's sync routine. You wouldn't
have to worry about "Active-Sync", "iTunes", Palm Desktop, etc. Each
version of MLO could use standard web protocols to sync with the host
server.

Also Conrad, you're already using the cloud yourself. Do you worry
about Google losing your e-mail data? The best thing about the program
ToDoMatrix is that it stores a local copy of your file but syncs it in
the background so you can work even when you are "off the grid".

Not sure why you say it's silly to be able to access your data
anywhere. Look at the datacenters Microsoft and Google are building.
Look at the latest generation of Corporate e-mail products like
Exchange 2010; they're turning into onsite/cloud hybrids with the next
generation going primarily cloud.

Don't want to stray too far off topic but there is a great book by
Harvard Business Journal Author, NIcholas Carr called "the Big
Switch". It was how people in the last century would never trust their
electricity to come from "the grid". They all said you could not trust
a public utility to create electricity so each little factory had
their own generator/water-wheel. The IT cloud is following the same
path from non-believers to believers.

I agree completely with Bryan, I use multiple devices for different purposes, different clients, different Exchange servers, etc. At the moment I have to be careful which device I enter data into MLO otherwise I end up in a merry-go-round of syncing them all to ensure they all have the recent data. If I haven't got the right device with me I even sometimes end up emailing ideas or tasks to myself rather than have to go through all that.

It would much better to have a could sync option. Of course this would be much easier if all the versions used the same file structure as we would be less reliant on desktop ActiveSync.

Bryan is right. From development view point it is much easier for us
to implement Cloud sync for new devices we plan so support. Everything
is ready for this. It is harder to implement desktop sync, since we
need to deal with Desktop Manager, Active Sync, wifi etc, etc.

So for new devices we will probably start with Cloud and then will add
desktop sync.

Andrey.

Hi Andrey -- I am a Palm Pre user and therefore based on some limited
searching here, I don't have great expectations of MLO support on the
Pre any time soon (if ever...) (However a WebOS version of MLO on an
HP WebOS Tablet would be KILLER!!!)

Anyway, I would really love to be able to take advantage of some of
MLO's great planning and organizing features to manage just my daily
to do list from the Pre. Basically, this would require MLO to be able
to sync tasks to one of the cloud "Task Management" services with an
open API. Several of these already have Pre apps -- RTM and Toodledo
(possibly others, but I'm not certain) both have apps that are good
enough for marking tasks complete or entering new tasks. (I would
include Google tasks here as well except I don't believe Google tasks
has a public API yet?)

Previously, I accomplished this on my Treos by syncing MLO to Outlook
and then Outlook to Palm OS DateBk6. (and I realize I could continue
this model with several 3rd party Pre syncing apps -- my Outlook is
not Exchange so I can't sync tasks OTA)...

So, I'm wondering if you have any plans to include syncing of the task
list only (not the full MLO outline or feature set) to any of the web-
based task management services (or creating one yourself -- EVEN
BETTER).

Any suggestions (beside switch to BB, IPhone, or Android!!! Sorry I
love my Pre too much)

Thanks very much for your consideration. I really love MLO's
incredible organization structure, but right now, I'm manually
managing my task list on my phone and it's become quite cumbersome so
I'm finding a little less utility in using MLO on a daily / weekly
basis because of my use case limitations.

Thanks for the great app and for listening

John

Just wanted to affirm John's post above... Love my Pre... Love MLO...
Would love a cloud solution because I hate paper.

Also want to ask for an online solution - I love MyDropbox and use it
to great effect to have my virtual assistant draft letters, save them,
and then have them automatically link to my HD. The problem with
MyDropbox is that it doesn't (as far as I'm aware) have a lock-out
feature whereby my VA would be prevented from accessing my MLO file
when I'm using it. What happens (on the occasions we've tried to use
MLO at the same time) is that MyDropbox saves a backup version, and we
end up not knowing which version has which changes. Very frustrating.
A hosted solution online would totally be worth paying for, especially
if my smart phone can get there.

For security you might want to look at this LifeHacker article on
using Dropbox with an Encrypted TrueCrypt Volume on the MyDropBox
share.
