getsatisfaction for MLO?

Since this forum is a mess and a horror to use as some users rightly
stated in a previous post I wonder if it would be a good move for MLO
to at least move its Feature Suggestions to a service like
www.getsatisfaction.com.

I like their system and its much more approachable than searching this
forum for popular suggestions, etc.

Any idea from the developer to improve the communication with the
international MLO userbase?

This is a great idea.

I would strongly support this. I have just started using a piece of
software called Balsamiq (for screen mockups) and they use GetSatisfaction
and I have been very impressed with the way it works.

For example, I wanted to find out whether it was possible to format the
sticky notes that you can attach to your mockup diagrams. I went to the
forum and searched for bullets - it returned a result showing that this
feature has 20 people who like the idea. The Developer can then tag the
idea to indicate that it is under consideration or is being implemented.
And for problems, people can flag whether they thing the problem has been
answered and which is the best answer

To see an example thread, try this:
http://community.balsamiq.com/balsamiq/topics/enhanced_paragraph_widget_for_
bullet_lists_and_numbered_lists

The one weakness that I can see is that you can't (as far as I can see) get
GetSatisfaction to send you an email for each new topic (which is what I
think I would like). You can mark topics to indicate that you want to get
notifications of further postings to that topic.

It also looks like the moderators can merge topics and do other stuff.

A big improvement on a Google Group in my view

I'm not a big fan of the idea to move to a forum simply to get folders.  Folders have two problems in my opinion.  First, they are only as good as the posters willingness to only post in the "correct" ones.   As an example, look at all the people that post cell phone questions in the main group and not the mobile MLO group.

The second is that threads change.  An original "bug" request or a "how to do something" request can turn into a feature request.  Or vica versa for that matter.  I've seen a number of "feature" requests get responded with "well you can already do that in MLO"...

Posting a "new feature" request should in my opinion be a two step process.  First, you should ask if the ability you are requesting is currently possible.  If not only then should you, imo, be making a feature request.

Using the group to ask how to do something makes sense to me.  Then having a separate tool like uservoice or getsatisfaction for the actual feature would be an improvement.  That makes more sense to me than moving to a new forum where the work to reward is in my humble opinion not very appealing...

I think you ought to take a closer look at GetSatisfaction because it doesn't work in the way you describe - eg there is no concept of folders - and it has capabilities which address virtually all of your issues - indeed if effectively implements your two step idea!

Firstly,  it encourages people to start by asking questions and before you can post,  it parses the question and looks for threads on  the topics covered in the question and displays these before you can actually post.  This works pretty well in my experience so the forum become an excellent place for people to ask questions.

Secondly,  it appears to have quite a powerful moderation facility - for example you can merge threads (which also deals with the misposting problems).  I would also guess that the moderator can change a thread marked as an idea into a question.

The combination of these two sets of capabilities turn it into a powerful tool because you don't get a proliferation of threads on the same topic.  Certainly my experience of using it to find out about how Balsamiq worked was a very positive one - I was able to find answers to most of my questions very quickly in a way that would not have been possible had they been using a Google Group or a standard forum.

OK so I'm not sure why you are arguing with someone that is basically
agreeing with you.

For the record, my reference about folders was in relationship to the
original post. Basically, concerning "this forum is a mess" and
people suggesting that MLO move to a forum with folders. I was not
suggesting GetSatisfaction used folders. You might want to re-read
what I posted under that light...

Richard - quite aside from the value of UserVoice, GetSatisfaction or anything else - you mention moderators who will merge threads etc making this new forum a wonderful place. Where do you think these moderators come from? I help moderate (for spam) this and the IPhone group, its a unpaid position that I handle in my spare time. I don't have the time and you won't pay me enough to do the work you propose. Who do you think will do this work?

Cheers
Mark

I am sorry if I misunderstood but your reply was to my posting which was
about GetSatisfaction and nowhere said 'I think moving to GetSatisfaction is
a good idea and much better than a forum for the following reasons' (which I
think would have made it a bit clearer :-))

And you still seem to think that initial posts should be made to the Google
Group which for the reasons indicated would lose much of the benefit
provided by GetSatisfaction.

Glad you agree overall tho'.

Going by the number the number of merged threads, etc in the Balsamiq forum (which is small because of the way that you are encouraged to search for and review existing threads before posting),  the amount of work involved is not high.

The traffic in main MLO forum is not that high and not dissimilar to that in the Balsamiq forum.  I was toying with the idea of volunteering my services.   I already moderate one other email group and it provides a bit of light relief from my work related activities.   I feel sure with 2-3 volunteers with Andrey to guide us, it would not be much work - may be an 1-2 hours a week.

Actually, otomo, you referenced the "this forum is a mess" thread where people were suggesting moving to a forum with folders.  Your counter suggestion was to move just the Feature Requests to a service like Getsatisfaction.  I liked that idea and tried to support it.

Truth is I had thought about making that very same suggestion.  If you just move the Feature Requests you can probably get away with just using the FREE service and don't need the extra features that you would have to pay for...

Hey Richard, you said "I would strongly support this" to a thread that originally said it would be a good move for MLO to at least move its Feature Suggestions to a service like www.getsatisfaction.com

It has been suggested in the past to move to Uservoice or GetSatisfaction.  That hasn't really gotten anywhere.  This suggestion was to start by just moving the Feature Suggestions to a service like UV or GS.  I liked that approach and tried to support it.

Just a thought here.  If you guys want to gain support for your ideas you might want to NOT argue with the people who are trying to support your ideas....

I'd prefer it to remain as an email forum so I can review messages during downtime while on the train/underground or just lounging around, rather than needing a full PC experience with internet connection.

I find that kind of forum not representative of the quality of MLO !

MLO is there to help in classifying everything, tasks, projects, ...
Such a forum is like a cheap shop where you can find anything you
want, at a very cheap cost.
The only one problem being to ... find it :-(

Current forum is good for peaople that want to keep aware about the
product evolution, problems, ... but for new guys who need more
specific or even generic info, it is simply useless !

This forum is just like an RSS, you are notified for new topics !

I vote for something else, even something like phpBB

Regards,
Dominique.

Sorry Neal, I missed that part where you expressed your support for
this idea. Pardon me. :-)

Now that we all agree to at least move the Feature Request Process
(AND ONLY THAT) to a webservice like getsatisfaction, what's happening
next?

I guess no one who actually has the power to initiate such a move does
care enough about this thread to actually do something and we all will
forget this thread until someone starts a similiar thread in a few
months? Am I right? ;-)

Time to set up a new recurring task in my MLO. :-)

I haven't fully investigated this but I think GetSatisfaction provides
an RSS feed of new posts which it may be possible to download and
review off line

As for example, today, I have "9 new messages" !
The 7 first are on the first displayed page (having to look to "New
message" under each topic), I discovered this one on the 4th page, and
have still to look for the last one !

In french the word to be used for such "Google group" is brol !

I takes more time to search where the new posts are rather then
reading them !
