I find it hard to swallow that by default when a project is created, it will be set to "Not started". What I can't stand is that for many years there has not been any shortcut for toggling it to "In progress". Has this changed recently?

thanks

I assume the answer is, unfortunatelly, NO, and that is utterly annoying :(

I wonder if there could be a key that toggles between all the statuses? Then only one key would have to be found.

I've already brought this up on the MLO4 Release Candidate thread, but to me the simplest (and most obvious) thing to do would be to have the ability to right-click on the Project Status in the task list and get a context menu to change the status. This is a significant and glaring oversight. There are other columns in the task list for which is possible to do, for example Due Date or Context, so why not Project Status? (Unfortunately, I will not be buying a license to MLO until this is implemented.)

Also, if a task is NOT a project, it's Project Status in the outline/task list shouldn't say Not Started, it should be blank instead. However, right-clicking to change this should automatically mark that task as a project. (Right now every new task by default says "Not Started" in the Project Status column, which is confusing.)

Chris  - there are lots of really good new features in V4 that you may want to look at before deciding not to upgrade.    I agree that it is very frustrating when the key thing that bugs you goes on not being fixed (and there is no indication of whether it is even accepted as something that needs fixing) but the harsh reality is that there are probably 300-400 things that people would like to see improved in MLO (we are a passionate and demanding bunch).    I feel sure that Andrey woulld like to address all of thse - it being a question of what he can achieve with the revenue stream that the product generates.

There is a lot of discussion in the beta forum about the fact that what Andrey is planning to fix/address is almost completely hidden from us (until it turns up in the release) and the resulting frustration (even anger) that this generates plus suggestions as to how this might be addressed.

However to publish and manage such a list would be a time consuming exercise that would take the development team away from development so it would be a difficult decision.

In the meantime, I would suggest that depriving Andrey of your uprade fee is not going to make any difference and  may deprive you of some useful new functionality.  However, getting lots of people (and by lots I mean more than 200) to support your request on User Voice is more likely to have an effect.  I had a quick look there and couldn't immediately see anything relating to this so you may either want to add it (or if is there already, to post a link).    http://mlo.uservoice.com

Aside: it is interesting to look this list - Mark has already marked some items as completed and there are number of additional ones that have now been included in V4 (eg Review) but they are all high scoring requests.

Richard, I understand what you're saying, but what I'm asking for is not a new feature, rather it is a bug in the way the application does not behave the way the user would expect (user interface failure). I want to underscore that the application can already do what we're asking -- at least on other fields in the outline/task list, we're just asking that the Project Status too has this simple, yet crucial ability to easily and quickly edit it with a context menu. I am a developer myself, and I honestly cannot think of a reason why this would take more than 15 minutes to code.

I agree. It's clearly a bug.

That sure is a bug, but I'm not asking for that. I want a keyboard shortcut. I really like MLO because you can do almost everything with the keyboard without the need to reach for the mouse. I'm not interested in right-clicking anywhere.

And, of course, there is no way you can confirm Andrey has made a note of our request since no bug tracking/feature request tool has been put in place yet regardless of how many times we have asked for it.

I realize my previous comment

I wonder if Andrey (or the responsible person) ever gets to read comments like this one. It should be really really easy to add this feature. I think that it is a shame that  this kind of quick wins fall on deaf ears for implementing them could make customers really happy with almost no effort.

I saw this discussion/request the first time around and it got me thinking "what is a Project?".
In my mind and your mind it's probably different.
If you are a project manager or dealing with projects at work, then a lot of your day is handling fairly complex project "stuff".
As I thought about MLO and how it's implemented, it is obviously not a project management system.
I suspect that there is "resistance" to adding anything to turn it into a project management system and this request is kind of hinting in that direction. Next it will be enhanced dependencies and Gantt charts, etc.
To me, a Project in MLO is simply a Task which needs to be broken down into two or more Tasks and can usefully be tracked as a single entity.
This request makes perfect sense, but I don't think I personally want MLO made more complex by adding PM features.
This request will not make MLO too complex, but I think a discussion needs to take place on what we want MLO to be and maybe more discussion on what a Project actually is (in MLO terms).

Just my thoughts. I have wired myself to the mains ready to be shocked by some serious reaction!

I always wince a little when a user says something like adding a particularly feature should be "really, really easy". I've been guilty of doing it, too, but reality is that without knowing the codebase and design, it's not fair to pass that type of judgement. I've worked on *many* things that should have been easy as imagined but that weren't, and vice-versa. Also, there is the issue of resources, prioritization of features, revenue, etc. to consider. Maybe the crew is shorthanded, maybe they are on well-deserved holidays, maybe they are cranking on 'important' features which often are given precedence over "quick wins".

Yes, it would be really, really nice however to have greater visibility into bug tracking and feature requests in a similar way to many large open source projects are run. Don't know about commercial ones, but should be possible. It is quite a management task though... I don't really like uservoice or whatever is used here, but that all should be a totally different discussion.

While I agree in that I don't want a full-blown PM system for mainly my chores, remember that I'm mainly asking for a shortcut. I hate having to reach for the mouse for a simple change of project state....

Generally speaking, I agree with you. People often state that something is easy when they actually have no idea what that particular effort really entails. But I do want to clarify something: This whole thread refers to a simple shortcut for toggling project state... I'm sorry but I do think that should be extremely easy.

Creating a bug tracking system means a lot of work, but that was not the point here. It is true, however, that not having a system up which enables you to have the right visibility of what users are suggesting or reporting as a bug, may be what is causing the team is not even aware this has been requested many times in the past.

I assume the the MLO team tracks bugs using some sort of bug tracking software, because they frequently put out new versions which correct errors. I don't know if they also track feature request using any other software/system different from uservoice. In any case, I think it is healthy to publish what you are working on if it has been previously brought to your attention by some of your fellow users.

On the other hand, maybe the team already incorporated this shortcut in the past, but since the help file still refers to MLO v3.6, the only way I can think of figuring out the current state of this request is by posting a question in this forum.

Hi
I created a uservoice voting here

http://mlo.uservoice.com/forums/9235-general/suggestions/7144514-toggle-project-status-with-a-hotkey

Let's vote for it to attract more attention of the developer:
