Inbox view tweak

Hi, I am wanting to make a copy of my Inbox default view and have it only show items that don't have a context.  I was able to do this by using an advanced filter for FolderName contains 'Inbox' but it shows the Inbox folder at the top.  I want it to look the way the default inbox view looks where it just shows the items inside the inbox and not the parent folder.  Attached is how it shows the folder on the top which is not what I want.  Any thoughts on this?

Hello Brian,

You could start by selecting the default "Inbox" View, so you won't need an advanced filter for FolderName. In the list of filters, in the "Contexts" group, you'll find (none) as an option at the top of the list of Contexts. Just select that and you'll have a view of the contents of the Inbox showing only those items with no Context assigned.

With MLO filters, there are usually several ways to achieve what you want. So, another option if you don't want to start with the default "Inbox" view (and I suspect you didn't manage to start with that view when you set up your filter), you could start with the default, unfiltered hierarchy view, set up an advanced filter on "TopLevelFolderName" contains 'Inbox', then configure the "show hierarchy" to include child items but not include parent items.

When I do this second option you gave, it is not adding the task to the inbox folder, it is adding it side by side with the inbox folder.  I need to use option 2 you gave because I need it to filter items that already have a context.  On desktop version, I can't save filter changes to the default inbox view.

Following up on this, it seems that with the custom view based on what you recommended for option 2 (which is what I need), I can't add tasks directly to inbox.  It adds it to same level as inbox instead of underneath it.  Is there a way to have it point the entry point to inside of inbox for the custom view?

Ah, you've found a problem with the second option. For the most robust solution, I'd suggest switching to the first option - a filter developed from the default Inbox filter.

Alternatively, if you develop the habit of always using the Rapid Task Entry dialogue to enter new tasks (Ctrl+Shift+M is the default Windows hotkey for bringing up that dialogue, whether you're in MLO or working in another application), then it will put them in the Inbox by default.
