[3.6] Sync with Android; Good alternative to Outlook?

Hello

I need to know if the latest release...

• syncs with Android well or is still a bit young
  
• is a worthy replacement for Outlook (ie. implements Conctacts, Calendar, and Notes in addition to Tasks), or only handles Tasks

It syncs well with Android, though not entirely automated/automatable, but is not trying to be a replacement for Outlook. It does, however, sync with Outlook, but I've not tried syncing both Outlook and Android.

I and someone else here use gSyncIt to sync Outlook Calendar and Contacts to Google (and hence to Android), and I just don't use Outlook tasks whatsoever anymore.

It's much more powerful in Task management than Outlook.

I agree with you Lisa, (as the "someone else here" using gSyncit)

I tried to sync with outlook, but it's then a complete [sorry I don't know the term for "stuff completely disordered"], because projects became outlook categories, ther is no subtask, so complete path is in each task, rendering it unreadable.

Sync works very well with android.

On the other hand, I'm experimenting an eventual disappointment about the android version of MLO, lacking of valuable views and a fast and easy way to empty the Inbox on the go (moving tasks one by one toward "far trees" [term ?] is tedious, not speaking about the numerous radio button you have to clic, and the over-hidden "save" making us wondering if, pressing back-key, we are saving or discarding changes.

That said, I almost exclusively use the MLO Android for it's shorcut to enter a new task directly from desktop.

Do you know about "Move" mode on Android?  It does help some with the Inbox issue, though adding Context is a lot of taps.

I have had to re-work my use model a bit to make Android useful, though not quite as bad as I thought. (Those of you on the beta group will remember my harping about "figure out the use model first, before finalizing the UI...can I please be petty for just a moment and say, "I told you so?"  Ok, now I feel better :)

But after a bit of use model tweaking, I now can make the views I have fairly useful for execution (actually doing tasks, marking them off, moving to a new date, etc) though I still do most planning / organizing on the desktop.  I've gotten it to the point, though, where even when I have both desktop and Android, I look at my Android task list to tell me what to do next. This has a big advantage for me -- it radically cuts down on distractions on my desktop.

Yes I know the "move" mode, but I find it tedious. (vs the desktop "move", which is very powerfull as it gives you the plain tree to scroll and then clic on).

When I first tried Android move I found it tedious as the only way I was moving tasks was by tap-tap-tapping on the arrow icons. That was before the people on this list showed me how to do the drag-and-drop using the drag handles that appear at the right edge of each task when in move mode. Are you using drag and drop on Android and still finding it tedious?

Yes because I often need a lot of scroll-down, sometimes a bad movement makes me loosing it along the way in the bad subtree, and if I managed I then have to scroll-up back to Inbox and lets go for another task among 30 !-)

Here's my Android move process. Not as fast as windows but not bad, there may be something here you haven't seen:

Go to Outline

Collapse All

Expand Inbox

Move mode

Drag tasks (they add to the bottom this way :)

If a task needs to be in a subtree, hover over that closed tree to find the right place, and hover opens it; close it manually

Hit "Undo" if a task wasn't moved right.

If I had seen Android before the desktop, Android probably would be faster, but for the desktop I have put numbers before all my main nodes (e.g. "9 -- Community") so I can hit that number to go straight to a node when moving tasks.

I find myself using cut and paste more often. I always leave the inbox folder open at the top to help speed things up. From wherever I am in the outline I just start scrolling up, grab the move bar at the right, and flick it to the top. From there I long tap on the item I want to move and cut. If the destination isn't far away I'll scroll to it, but if I'm not sure how best to get there I'll just search for a word in the title, tap it, and then hit the back button to jump to it in the list. Then I long-press on destination, hit paste, and choose child or parent as appropriate. I find the move system works well for small to medium size lists, but for my entire outline I find the cut, find, and paste method a little faster. But, whatever works!

Thanks for the input. Since I'm looking for a replacement for Outlook and do not want to share infos with Google, it looks like MLO isn't the right too for me.

I believe there are other ways to share Outlook calender and such to Android without going to Google.  The phone does have a private Calendar & Contacts  (I know because I've put things there that didn't sync to my Google calendar and I almost missed them).

You will still need something for Tasks, though. So you'll have to use *something*, and MLO is awesome. 

Would you use the Cloud sync anyway? It's provided through Amazon servers, but still "in the cloud". My comments about sync were based on Cloud. Or would you use Wifi sync? 

Has anyone here tried syncing to both Outlook and Android Wifi? I have a very old Outlook so wouldn't be a good test case even if I had time.
