I've suspended a project/folder, but a task from it is still showing up in active actions. That's unexpected. How do I fix that? I'm willing to delete the project or task, but then what's the point of suspension?

Unfortunately, there's next to no automation or linkage between different task properties - project status has no effect on task completion or hidden status.

There have been previous conversations where some people have wanted to have a live task in a not-started project, for pre-project work. I'm not one of those people - but I guess the lack of integration between the parameters is to give the flexibility to accommodate the people who do want that behaviour.  Luckily, the filters are also extremely flexible, so you could customise your view/filter with an Advanced rule to say:
  • ProjectStatus <> "Suspended"
See how you get on with that.

Regards,
Stéphane

Hi! I just wanted to give an update. I was able to add a filter to the Active Actions view which excluded tasks that were "Suspended." Sadly, this does not work down the hierarchy. If I suspend a project, for example, its tasks will still show up in the Active Actions list.

And it seems there is no way to query a task's parent's Project Status, so there's no way to suspend all project tasks without specifying all tasks as Suspended. That is unwieldy.

Would it be possible to create a folder, say "Backburner" or "Archive," whose contents could be easily excluded from the Active Actions view?

Hello ckle...

You can set up different advanced filters for the parents and children of an item which matches a filter, using the "Config" button next to the "ShowHierarchy" parameter. Does that help?

If you can give me an example of an outline structure and how you want to filter it, I'm sure I could use those features to help you find a filter configuration which suits your needs.

Hi, I'm confused. The filter that Stéph proposed for you (ProjectStatus <> "Suspended") does not purport to test the task status but rather to test the status of the project of which the task is a part. You appear to be reporting that the filter inappropriately tested the task status. If this is true, either I am misinterpreting the command or else there is a bug. After thinking about it further, I realize that I do not even think that there is any suspended status for a task versus a standalone project. So I am confident that Stéph's filter will do what  you are requesting.

My suggestion, if you want to discuss it further, would be for you to give an example of a small project and a filter and say what it does versus what you want it to do.

Another way to do this if your entire project is contained in one branch of a tree is to march the branch as "hide in todo"
That should make everything beneath inactive.

My problem might be that filters don't sync to other devices. I seem
to have been required to set up the view filter for both my tablet and
my mobile phone. Is that the case? Do views not sync across devices?

BTW, the filter does seem to be working as expected.

That's a great solution! I've created both an Archive and Backburner folders and marked them "Hide in todo." The Archive will contains completed or abandoned/suspended projects, while the Backburner will be projects I will do SOMEDAY. :D

Thank you!

By "filters" I think you mean Views.  No, Views do not sync between desk and mobile.

Great, glad it worked for you :)

Personally I don't move projects.  I leave them in-situ and mark the top-level item of the project both Suspended and Hide in To do but part of my reason for that is that I rely heavily on inherited contexts so moving things around can sometimes add more complication than it solves.

One thing about MLO is that there are always a dozen ways to skin any given cat.

Correct, Views don't sync automatically to other devices, as they are separate from the MLO file. However, you can export a View (with filter and zoom) which you've created on one device, email it to yourself and then send it to MLO on the other device.
