I often register for webinars and public events. When registered, I receive an ICS file that Outlook will easily open. This is not my first choice because my calendar is on Google.
To open the ICS file in Google Calendar, I have to go to the parameters and go to Import/Export. Then I have to find the ICS file in the correct Windows folder and specify the correct MLO calendar. This is tedious.
Those ICS files are useful because they contain the time and the duration, and the link to access an online event. It is particularly interesting when the webinar happens in another time zone, Google and Outlook take care of converting the time to my time zone.
I suggest that MLO in Windows should open the ICS files. The most useful way would be via a drag and drop action on MLO. If impossible, it could be opened via a Send to action in the Windows Explorer or an Open with action. Once inserted in MLO, it will quickly be synchronized in Google Calendar.
I tried to drop an ICS file on MLO and I get an error. I think it is configured to accept only task from MLO. There must be ways to configure MLO to accept also ICS files and to act accordingly.
Another convenient way would be to use the email. I tried it also. When I email an ICS file to my MLO account, it doesn’t try to interpret the included ICS file. It only takes care of the title of the email. I suggest that when an ICS file is attached to the email of the MLO account, the MLO cloud should open it and use the correct information inside.
Of course, I don’t know all the issues related to the security related to the ICS file. At the first glance, they don’t execute anything However, in any case it should be thoroughly tested.
Thanks,
