You can show all tasks, parents and children, in the to do list, if you want. In the To Do view, just go into the Filter settings - General and change 'Show Actions:' from "Active" to "All".
The Filter settings are in the left hand pane, just under the Views. If you can't see that pane, just make it visible by pressing Alt-F1.

Another option is to change the children to "hide in to-do", then the parent shows up. What I do is put (+) in the parent's caption to indicate to myself that there are children.
For tasks whose children accumulate over time, I create a sub parent and mark it as hidden. I do wish there were a "hide children"option.
