I have a project that ended before all its subtasks were completed. I marked the project task as complete, but it is still showing up in the "In Progress" projects list.

This is unexpected behavior. Can you fix it so that completed projects will not be considered active, even if they have unfinished tasks? Or is there another way to handle this?

Are you asking to mark any uncompleted subtasks as complete when the project ends? Instead of clicking the completion checkbox for the project end, select the project and go to the TASK menu in the menu bar at the top. select "Advanced" and then "Complete task and all subtasks"

Do you want to leave the subtasks uncompleted but clear the "In Progress" status from the project? That status is manually controlled anyhow. in the task details sidebar on the right, in the Properties display, scroll down until you find the Project section. You will see a status button that probably says [In Progress      v] - click on the down arrow and select Completed (or any other status you like).

I'll ask your next question for you - why doesn't this status update automatically as the project and its tasks get completed? - this has been the subject of many long discussions. Different people consider their projects "started" at "completed" at different points. Sometimes there are tasks need to prepare for a project and tasks for housekeeping, paperwork, followup, collection activity, etc at the end of the project that some consider to be in the project and some consider to be outside of the project.

No. This would not be an accurate representation of reality. The
project finished (for whatever reason) with those tasks not done.

Interesting! Not how I'd do it, but there ya go. :D

I would prefer if I mark a project as "complete," that it is no longer
"In Progress." That seems reasonable and logical to me.

Good insights. Thank you!

I'd love to have more control over the dependence of properties on each other, so I can make ticking off a project task as completed also change its Project status flag to "completed". As it is though, as Dwight says, project status is an independent parameter from the completed status of the task which is flagged as a project. As a workaround, I've got into the habit of changing the project status at the same time as I complete a project-task - So I can hit spacebar to mark it a complete, then use the shortcut key to change project status.

For me, it's Alt-J to toggle whether a task is a project or not, and Shift-Alt-J to cycle through the project statuses. I've also got custom formatting to use big "play", "pause", "stop" icons (like a media player or an old VCR symbols) to indicate the project status.
