Food vs. Edible Food-Like Substances
"There's no such thing as good or bad food. What's actually good or
bad is the amount that's eaten.”
Read that yesterday in an online article. It's a common refrain among
dieticians and nutritionists. Common, but moronic. Ten bucks says that
the "nutrition expert" who wrote it could stand to lose 20 pounds.
No such thing as bad food? Utter hogwash. There are thousands of foods
in your local grocery store that do nothing but trigger disease and
fat gain.
Why do the "experts" say this? Because they believe that it's okay to
eat poison, as long as you only eat a small amount of poison. They
think all calories are the same, so just consume a little of the toxic
substance in question and you'll be fine. Probably. Maybe. (More
ranting about that HERE.)
That said, I actually agree with this statement... but with a very
large caveat and modification. Here goes:
There's no such thing as a bad food. The problem is, most people don't
eat food anymore.
On what freakin' planet is this even remotely considered "food?"
And 90% of the things in your favorite grocery store simply aren't
food. Oh, they're edible, but your body doesn't really know what to do
with foreign substances like junk food, processed food, breads,
cereals, "cheese-like product," neon-purple corn-syrup candies, milk
meant for the infants of another species, etc.
This is the basic premise of several of Michael Pollan's books, such
as In Defense of Food. "Eat food" he advises often. No duh, right? But
if you've struggled with body fat like I have, then you know that you
didn't get fat eating the real foods our bodies were programmed to
thrive on. Rather, you got that way eating what Pollan calls "edible
food-like products."
In short, these non-foods throw your biological systems into a panic.
The result? Your body slowly self-destructs. The first sign of that
process? Fat gain.
"Eat food." Two words that say a whole lot more than they seem to on
the surface. It's something to think about today. And it's the
foundation of the Velocity Life: "primitive" real food, modern cutting-
edge supplements, and the most effective training methods. Life,
accelerated. -- Chris
