Job Description: Power BI Developer (Insurance Domain)

Location:Chicago, IL (Local candidate only)


Role Overview

We are seeking a highly analytical and technically proficient Power BI Developer with specific experience in the Insurance industry. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex insurance data and strategic decision-making. You will be responsible for the end-to-end development of BI solutions—from data ingestion and ETL modeling to the creation of high-impact dashboards that track premiums, claims, and risk metrics.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Dashboard Development: Design and develop interactive Power BI dashboards, KPI scorecards, and visual reports that translate raw insurance data into actionable insights.

  • Data Modeling & Architecture: Design, map, and implement robust data models using Star/Snowflake schemas. Ensure models are optimized for performance and scalability.

  • MSBI Stack Integration: Utilize the full Microsoft Business Intelligence stack, including SSIS (for ETL), SSAS (for Tabular/Multidimensional models), and SSRS (for paginated reporting).

  • Requirement Translation: Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs, formulate functional specifications, and set realistic deadlines for delivery.

  • Security & Governance: Establish and maintain Row-Level Security (RLS) to ensure sensitive policyholder data is only accessible to authorized personnel.

  • Documentation: Create comprehensive technical documentation including data dictionaries, model relationships, DAX logic, and parameter descriptions.

  • System Optimization: Perform tactical adjustments to existing BI systems to enhance data refresh speeds, query performance, and user experience.

Requirements & Technical Skills

  • Core Tools: Expert-level proficiency in Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and Power Query (M).

  • Advanced Analytics: Deep knowledge of DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) for complex calculations and time-intelligence functions.

  • Database Management: Strong expertise in SQL Server, including writing complex queries, stored procedures, and understanding OLAP frameworks.

  • ETL & Warehousing: Hands-on experience with Data Gateways, data preparation, and the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) framework.

  • Insurance Domain Knowledge: (Preferred) Understanding of industry-specific KPIs such as Loss Ratios, Combined Ratios, Claims TAT, and Premium Growth.

  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication skills to bridge the gap between technical teams and non-technical insurance stakeholders.

  • Methodology: Ability to thrive in an Agile environment with a focus on continuous improvement and iterative delivery.
