Betar is home to a number of new olim, primarily gerim (gerei tzedek), from South and Central America, Spain and Portugal. Their native language is Spanish or Portuguese (similar). A few know some basic English.

Some have moving evidence of being descendants of Anousim (Marranos), such as performing Jewish practices which have been passed down in their families through the centuries.  They are not connected with xianity in any way, in countries where that is the official state religion.

They are friendly people, both families and singles, deeply sincere in their desire to practice Yiddishkeit properly. They left the security and familiarity of their native country, well-paying jobs (some have university degrees), family, and social connections – to start everything anew. Here, they experience great difficulties because of the language barrier and the new surroundings.

The mitzvah of Ahavat HaGer obligates each of us to help these modern-day followers of the path of Ruth.

Please be in contact if you know:

1.  People who speak Spanish or Portuguese: in Betar Ilit, Jerusalem, Bet Shemesh and the vicinities, willing to be in touch with the gerim.

2. Halacha teachers in Spanish or Portuguese: men/women who know halachot in detail and are willing to teach them, on a limited or extended basis.

3.  Gerim from these countries: anyone who needs assistance or support.

4.  Shabbat meals: people willing to host newcomers for Shabbat meals.

5. Lending library of Jewish books in Spanish or Portuguese: donations of books (halacha, mussar, etc.) and/or funds will be gratefully accepted.
