Sairam to all,

The next theme under My Experiments with Truth for the fortnight starting from 9th October till 22nd October is

"Practising the 5 D's-Dedication, Devotion, Discipline, Discrimination and Determination"

Swami says-

In the cosmic university, though there are scientific, political, economic and other studies, what
is fundamental to all of them is the spiritual knowledge.
Even in the spiritual field there are special subjects.
There is one group which may be described
as the five D's: Dedication, Devotion, Discipline, Discrimination and Determination. Those who
have mastered the five D's are qualified to receive God's love.

The workbook for the theme is also enclosed for reference.
Please introspect, practice and share your experience with all.

Sairam,

Dear All, A very warm Sairam to all of you!

Please see the current theme to be practiced - Practising the 5 D's-Dedication, Devotion, Disclipine, Discrimination and Determination

I have several doubts and I am raising a few questions for all of you:
  1. Do you think we can practice devotion? I mean, if we have devotion - it comes out naturally - right? Can you practice more and more and more of devotion? if Yes, let us know how?
  2. Similarly, how can you increase the levels of determination and dedication you have? And what do we understand here by determination and dedication - Is it increasing determination and dedication towards Anything and Everything? Is it increasing determination and dedication towards god? towards godliness? towards goodness? towards service? towards faith?
  3. Well, Discipline and Discrimination is something which one can consciously practice and improve - But what do these terms really mean? Does Discipline just mean simply doing everything "by the clock" ? or Does it mean, moderation in everything? Also, what are the guidelines for discrimination - Can we say, that "Dharma" in the truest sense of the word - is the one single guideline for practicing discrimination?

Looking forward to learning from all of you!

Loving Regards,
Vikas

In my opinion.
Devotion is Dev- emotion. Like Love it is an emotion. It does not come
by practice , its what you feel inside.l Emotions like Anger, sadness
and laughter comes and goes in a fleeting minute. Love lasts longer
but it also some times goes. Devotion is something one should hang
onto as much as possible for it gives supreme happiness bliss.
Determination and Dedication arises out of the desire for the aspired
goal. How badly one wants his goal that determines your dedication and
determination.
Discipline is organising ones available resources - time, money,
energy, intellect in the best possible manner to achieve ones Goals
faster.

Dharma is ones duty, no discrimination is necessary to practice it.
Dharma is in itself supreme and above all else. Dharma is very subtle,
so it takes considerable wisdom to know at any given point of time
what is one's Dharma. Case in example, the Mahabharata stalwart Bhisma
the epitome of Dharma failed at the crucial time of Draupadi's
shaming. While Lord Krishna rose to reveal his divine cosmic self to
urge Arjuna to take up arms when Arjuna felt it was Adharma to wage
war on his elders and brethren. Thus God protects them who follow
Dharma.
Dharma is the word of God and it is very subtle, one must have
Devotion and by determination and dedication gather enough wisdom to
understand the soft word of God and carry out his wish. In that alone
is salvation.

Jai Sai Ram.

These 5Ds are interdependent and interrealted  and needs to be mutually respected, cannot be bifurcated or seen differntly. yes prime of them is Devotion and all others will be a tributary and togather form a  perinial Ganga  to practice in life .

Sairam!

True devotion is not bound by rituals or set procedures. The Gita talks about various offerings like

patram (leaf),

pushpam (flower),

phalam (fruit), and

toyam (water). These words should not be taken literally. The human body is the leaf that must be offered to the Lord. Like the leaf of the tree, the body too would one day die and decay; no one can say when that will happen. Before such a fate befalls, the body in its fullness, freshness, and purity, ought to be offered to the Lord. The flower of your heart is what would please the Lord most and not the ones purchased from the market, which fade in a few hours. The flower of the heart, that is totally pure, soaked in love, and perfect does not wither easily. And which fruit would please God? He is not interested in fruits that grow on a tree; Mind is the fruit that must be offered to th e Lord.

All the five Ds are inter-linked with each other.  You start practicing one and the others will automatically follow.

I am not clear on Discrimination - if anybody can throw some light on that, it would be nice.

For example - devotion means it has to be complete 100% - there is no question of even 99.9%  - it has to be either 100% or it is not there at all.  And, our God was also looking for a person of that kind till the end!

Let us all unitedly pray and raise above the ordinary and try and please our dear Lord!

Best regards and Sairam!

Aum Sai Ram!

Discrimination is a very very important aspect as it gives direction to our words/ thoughts and deeds.. Discrimination as such refers to the use of our mind/ intellect to discriminate into what is bad/ good.. what is right/ wrong, etc. Without which we will not be able to take the correct decisions/ next steps.

Hope this helps J

All the 5 Ds are definitely interlinked and we are practising them each minute of our lives. I personally feel Devotion and Discrimination are the two head lamps which point out Determination, Dedication or Duty and Discipline. Discrimination helps us sift between desire and need, between good and the pleasant and accordingly it shores up our resources for  dedication, determination and discipline needed to pursue our goals.

Dear All,

All the 5 D's are surely interlinked, but don't we exhibit or express some D's more than the others?
A similar analogy is of the 5 Human Values - The 5 Values are all interlinked, but some express Love more and some express Truth more and so on...

Whether it be the 5 Ds or the 5 Values - All these are "inherently within us" - we have them 'embedded into us'. But then why do we exhibit/express some more and some less - or why don't we all express all of these fully?

Lets think of ourselves as a Onion - to reach the core of the onion, one needs to peel it layer by layer. Similarly, all of us, have so many layers covering the "real I" - covering our "true Self". The goal of our life is to keep peeling the negativity, bad habits, jealousy, greed, anger, all the vices, our vasanas, our old karma - which are 'deposited on us' as layers - and as and when we peel off a layer, our core shines more! the core which has the 5Ds or the 5 Values - it exhibits or expresses itself more and more!

How do we peel these layers? Well, we can peel them through every thought-word-deed or lets say every 'act' we do - through our home/office work, through singing bhajans, through undertaking seva activities, through 'Love all - Serve all'. In essence, whatever Yoga/means you choose - Bhakti, Jnana, or Karma - each of these gives you an opportunity to peel your layers and to "reach to your core" - the more near you are to the core - the more the values/Ds will shine through you - the more near you'll be to God (since the core, as Swami says, is God Itself)

Looking forward to learning/hearing from all of you,

Sairam

Discrimination in sanskrit is VIVEK

A very crucial subject in itself (not a word) like sathya , dharma etc etc.

I would say refer to Viveka chudamani by shankaracharya & listen to the present day seers

it uses all the faculties of our intellect (buddhi) sometimes it is judgement( about a situation, person, context etc etc), some times it is acknowledgement of an act by another person, sometimes it is a reaction / response (which need to be immediate)

The results of expression of Viveka may or may not be accepted by the society.
