Are Steroid Creams Any Good For Eczema

I have quite bad eczema on my arms, and my son has it on his arms and
chest. The doctor has suggested we try steroidal based creams for
treating it, but I'm worried about the possible side effects of such
treatments. I found a couple of sites on the internet that say steroid
creams are a lot safer than they used to be, which suggests they may
not be such a good idea after all.

Anybody got any feedback/suggestions to help me make a decision?
