Assalamualaikum .
Dear all,
This is report on heater damages.
Dr Ghafour have told me by email on Jun 26, during his experiment, the
heater controller was trip and he found out the heater is burned. He
also noticed the Aluminum boat is also melted.
Last week on Julai 22, I went to UM and checked the system. The heater
was dismantled from the base copper plate and I found out the heater
is broken in 2 pieces.
Based on this, I make some deduction how this heater can be damaged.
As the room is humid, the Aluminum can get oxidase easily, as shown by
the picture below. During the experiment, the Nitrogen gas must be
flow to avoid the reaction between oxygen from the environment. Due to
limited nitrogen gas flow and combined with high temperature of 400
degree C, the aluminum boat was melt on top of the heater. As the
temperature of this process can achieved more than 400 degree C (which
is the maximum temperature of the heater), the ceramic can crack and
damaged the heater.
Currently we need to buy new heater and re-write the experiment
procedure of the system.
For the time been, the TLD spectrometer was moved to other room near
to main entry. This room is less humid and there are no water leaking.
For experiment procedure, I have some modification and new pre-caution.
1- Always check the condition of the Aluminum boat before placing the
sample. If the boat is corroded and rusty, please make a new boat. The
boat can be made by shaping an aluminum foil.
2- Always make sure the nitrogen gas flow is sufficient to remove the
oxygen in the chamber.
3- Let the gas flow at least 5 minutes before starting the heating process.
4- Do not push the heater temperature more than 450 degree to avoid damage.
