Everything is working great on it. However, we use barracuda backup and was told by a colleague that barracuda no longer supports restores of esxi host under 6.0. For that reason I am trying to put a plan together to move these VMs to a newer ESXI host.

So I got a bit more information. At another location there 3 other hosts that make a vmware cluster. It is running vcenter 5.1. Inside them are dozens of VMs and are connected to a SAN storage device. The Vms inside them belong to the organization that has the other host that I talked about in my OP and then it has VMs from other organizations as well.

@jadrien : Thanks for giving those tips. They seem right to the point and just what I needed to hear. I work with a team and they are the ones who setup the cluster and previous hosts so I will have to bring this info back to them and see what they want to do.

Since it is a single host, I am not sure you need vCenter at all. Anyway, the cluster is straightforward, so it would be best to perform a fresh new installation instead of upgrading. Move the virtual machines over after installation and the initial configuration of the new host is complete.

Did not know about that website but I will check it out. hmm I can make a new 6.5 host and then copy the VM from the esxi 5.1 host? Wont they have some sort of compatibility issues that way? Yes I am thinking upgrading the memory would be important.

No, ESXi is backward compatible. Any virtual machines migrated from an older hypervisor version and having an older virtual hardware version will work on top of a new ESXi hypervisor, but not vice-versa.

I just went through this process. Did the Proliant Support Pack 2019-03. Unzip cp035738..zip, copy sut-esxi6.7-offline-bundle-2.4.0.0-31.zip to /tmp directory on the ESXi host. Then run the following command: esxcli software vib install -d /tmp/sut-esxi6.7-offline-bundle-2.4.0.0-31.zip then reboot. From SSH session run sut -status, you may have to supply iLO credentials. Run sut -set mode= AutoDeployReboot. After that it should install the drivers/firmware that are waiting to be deployed.

Am I the only one who finds this to be ridiculous? I have to touch every single server to install a VIB - Reboot - then touch it again to set the Mode?!?! Not to mention that changing a Server Profile in OneView requires the server to be powered OFF!

Good questions, it feels like it was a lot simple for previous gen servers and can't see any benefit of this new, much more complicated setup. If iSUT is going to continue to be required it should be in the HPE ISOs and configured to AutoDeploy mode as default.

Thank you for this post! Seriously, concise and to the point. Just updated three new servers thanks to your help and psftp and putty. The only thing was figuring out which offline link was right. Here is the latest one.

sut still defaults to "ondemand" -- which I think is a good default. If HPE picked a different default then there is a (small) risk of ESXi hosts rebooting "unexpectedly" when firmware is staged to them.

I am trying to feed ESXi host syslogs to Splunk. The documentation around that is quite comprehensive. The requirement bits are quite daunting though. Just want to check if my understanding of the setup is correct.
1. My understanding is that I will need Splunk App for VMware to be installed on Indexer and SH for it to be able to interpret the VMware logs.
2. In addtion to the App, I will need Splunk Add-On for VMware to be installed on number of Splunk servers based on the document below?

3. We use Splunk Cloud for search and indexing. So I assume the installation on SH and Indexer need to be carried out by Splunk?
4. From the document, it seems to indicate that I need a dedicated SH for VMware Add-on and App, is that correct?
5. The most confusing bit is DCN and Intermedia forwarder. Can they be on the same VM? The Splunk OVA for VMware, is that just for DCN? Do I have to use HF to forward esxilogs?
