MLO test-drive

took notes of everything I thought could be useful to be considered for the
next versions of the product (in no particular order of importance). I am
aware some of the items were already discussed, but I put those anyway to
summarize everything in a single place.
::
1. Todo/Outline navigation: Double-clicking on a todo-list item (or choosing
an option from its context menu) should navigate you back to that
particular item in the outline. That would be SUPER useful.
2. Recurrente on Due date: I´ve already seen people mentioning this, just to
add a +1. Due date should be fixed, lead time should move the start date
backwards.
3. I´ve already posted about this, but "places" really should be called
"contexts". Frees the mind from the physical world.
4. Importante of task: "none", IMO should be called "min". I would think
that a task with "none" as importance shouldn´t appear at all in the todo
list (why would I want to make something with *no* importance?)
5. Auto-Update: I can´t see the use of the checkbox. Why would someone NOT
want to have the todo-list auto-updatable? Is it a performance problem with
or something like that?
6. Dockable Windows: Sometimes it´s useful to see the notes of an item
together with its properties; sometimes it´s useful to see the outline
together with the todo-list, and so on. Different people will find useful
different combinations of information. So why not make all the sections
dockable and let the user choose the layout (in the same way Visual
Studio.NET works). Of course, the default layout would be the agreed "best"
for most users, and if you´re savvy enough (I guess a lot of MLO users are)
you can customize the layout. In the same way Visual Studio does, you can
also dock windows over the others (generating tabs).
7. I don´t see the status bar being used today. Is there any use for it?
8. There should be a toolbar, as already discussed in the group.
9. I think it´s confusing to have *ALT*+Ins for inserting tasks, but
*CTRL*-del to delete. I am always confused which one I should be pressing.
I understand this might be the case to prevent accidental deletion, but I
think Undo takes good care of that.
10. Rich text in the notes field would be terrific.
11. Multi-select: select many tasks in the outline (with SHIFT or CTRL) and
setting a property to be applied on all of them would be very welcome.
12. MLO: I think the acronym MLO should be banned from the UI (sounds
unprofessional to have in the product, no?). MyLife Organized should be used
consistenly - the icon in the task bar reads "MLO" while the window title
reads "MyLife Organized". There´s also a menu entry "Join MLO community"
right below "MyLife Organized website".
13. Computed-score: This topic has already been beaten up as hell, but I
really think is very important to have the algorithm behave as
"normal=default=neutral" to make the computed-score usable.
14. Date Range: In the same way Outlook works, one should be able to select
a date range in the Date field of the todo-list, to show all tasks regarding
that period - not limiting it to a single day.
I think that´s it for now. Sorry if I dumped too much in here.
Now, really: what an awesome product MLO is! My test-drive is going well and
I think now there are almost no excuses left for NOT buying the product. I
also intend to teach a in-company time management/GtD seminar and I´ll
certainly use MLO for that. Keep up with the awesome job!

Thanks for your great MLO analysis and excellent ideas. My comments are
below:
1. Good idea and easy to implement. Just done this way:
feature: To-do/Outline double click navigation
Double-clicking on a To-Do-list item navigate you back to
that particular item in the Outline.
Double-clicking on an Outline item expands children if they
exist or if they do not exist navigate you to the To-Do list and
activate this item if it is in the To-Do list
2. Yes this is in my list for analysis.
3. Agree. Already planned.
4. Completely agree. In the past if you set to 'none' the item
disappeared from To-Do. Now this functionality is changed and the item
does not disappear if you set minimal value. Changed to 'min'.
5. Agree with Bob.
6. Yes will be added for analysis.
7. Will be used. I just need to stop and think about the best info I
can place there in different situations.
8. Agree.
9. Do you propose just 'Del' for deletion? Or as an alternative I
can add 'Shift+Del' together to current Ctrl+Del.
10. I'm still thinking about this...
11. Yes I know :) It is in the plan. But since it is not even one week
of work and test I postponed this for now. There are so many situations
I have to predict so that user does not screw up something with this
power...
12. Thanks for suggestion. I'll keep an eye on it. Changed in menu
and task bar. In the task bar I just wanted to save space but probably
you are right.

9. I don't see a problem with *del* only. I think it's better than making
*anything*-del, because this way my mind understands that ins and del work
in the current level/task, and only when I need to make an operation on an
extra-level (ex: add child), I need to keep pressed an extra key. Does this
make sense?
10. One thing I forgot to mention is the ability to add attachments,
outlook-style. Not sure if overkill, but this would open the possibility to
make MLO the uber-application for managing my projects - adding mindmaps,
brainstorms, spreadsheets, etc. Today I can use file links, but it's way
more portable to keep everything in the same file.
11. A less drastic change that would be useful is to make available
multi-select to be able to move multiple same-level items in the outline.
This way I could move a batch of items from, say, Someday/Maybe, to
Projects. Another good use I see for it is setting a place to the parent
(the children inherit it), and then I can easily switch places for the
multiple children items just dragging them to a different parent. Something
to keep in mind.
13. Bob, I'm not sure how I can help, but if you can think anyway I can be
useful on this, please let me know.
