Do you think Eklavya and Arjun can be in the same class?

Can Sania and Uma be in the same class?
What idea of India does it uphold? What current ideas of India does it challenge?
The opportunity - Sania and Uma can study in the same class
RTE Section 12(1)(c) enables children from economically weak and socially disadvantaged families to send their children to a private school of their choice*. This policy provides an opportunity for 10 million children across India to stake claim for a better opportunity in the next five years and increase thereby accountability of our public schooling system. As is the case with most progressive policies in India, implementation lags vision by a few decades.

*unaided non-minority schools subject to lottery in case of oversubscription
What do I need to know first?
In our nation's capital and city brimming with social and legal activism, only 3% of eligible families were aware of this opportunity last year. At the end of an year's campaign in South Delhi, we nudged this number to 15% and enabled 1500 families to file 3500 applications. For every 100 families we touched with our enrolment campaign, 50 applied and 15 eventually made through the lotteries. Our dedicated community champions on average motivated and supported 50 families to apply. For more on this, read reports of our work last year Campaign Report 2013 and Social Inclusion Report.
Mission 10k - What am I getting into?
We are a small core group of individuals who believe that strategic, social campaigns with good intent can shift societal behaviors and attitudes. We are passionate about challenging our societal notions on inclusion. This is a campaign to nudge our knowledge, behavior and mindsets related to inclusion within our schools.

Let's start with a simple question:

Do you believe that a Dalit Muslim girl from Bihar** can become the PM of India?

We believe it is possible - if we build inclusive schools for the future. Our campaign aims to enable 10,000 families in Delhi to be empowered to apply for an inclusive classroom. We want to be the campaign that inspires similar campaigns all over India.

Last year, we inspired a campaign in Ahmedabad through IIM-A. We inspired a campaign in Chennai called Knock Knock through Becoming I Foundation. We inspired AAP government to do a week long campaign for admissions under RTE Section 12(1)(c).

This year, we want to put "education equity" at the center of the political agenda during the months of nursery admissions. We believe our campaign in Delhi can be the spark for this. We want to learn and showcase excellence in data analytics, digital communication, community organizing, volunteer recruitment and engagement. All of this with limited financial resources.

Mission 10k - How will the numbers add up?
  • One community champion supports 50 families during December-January
  • We require just 200 dedicated champions across Delhi during the months of December and January to make this happen. We already have built partnerships with Pratham, SEWA, NIIT and Udhyayan Care to recruit community champions.
  • We will have the backbone campaign structure in place to support community champions - research, communication collateral, digital communication structures like app and helpline, community outreach and volunteer recruitment.
How can I do my bit?
Core Team member (10+ hrs per week)
  • You can run the backbone communication structure (app, helpline and social media platforms)
  • You can recruit volunteers from colleges and corporates
  • You can perfect our community organizing and training modules
  • You can run our community partnerships
  • You can run our advocacy agenda with the DoE
  • You can create centralised lottery and student tracking softwares
I want to become a core team member
Volunteer (5-10 hrs per week)
  • You can recruit or support a community champion as a mentor
  • You can help us build partnerships to recruit community champions
  • You can support any of the core team members in their work
  • You can recruit other volunteers from your college or company
I wish to volunteer with Indus Action
