I was a freshman at the Ohio State University and was coming across the
Oval. I noticed several groups of girls crying and they were obviously
disturbed. When I reached the south side of the Oval, a car suddenly
stopped, threw open the doors, and turned his radio up full blast. The
radio announcer shouted, "The President is dead!" Of course, this
shocked everyone hearing it and explained the crying girls.
I immediately went to my rooming house and asked the elderly lady who
owned it if I could watch her television set since we didn't have one
in or room. She said OK and asked why. She nearly fell over while
rushing to turn on her black & white TV.
We remained glued to the set for next several days witnessing history
in the making. All classes were canceled for the next few days and the
assassination was, of course, the only topic of conversation. I
purchased the first special edition newspaper that had the boldest
headlines I'd ever seen. JFK DEAD!
We saw Oswald being shot on live TV. When it happened, everyone in the
room sat in disbelief as to what we were witnessing. We watched the
funeral procession and it was one of the saddest things I've ever
witnessed.
