Assalamualaikum All.

Recently compiled an article on Entrepreneurship from Indian context, thought of sharing with my Masjid community with an assumption that it might trigger some thoughts to serve larger interests. I travel often to Irving for business reasons and found something amazing that I don’t find anywhere in the world even when it comes to Muslims. SubhanaAllah amazing discipline, highly dynamic , hard working and passionate individuals with serious sincere concern for Ummah and mankind across globe. While first generation of most immigrants had less privilege to choose b/w business and job, InshaAllah next generation should try their hands over business! Nothing to lose, read the article…

Entrepreneurship is a journey, if traveled with perseverance, can build nations and communities, says Abdullah Akbar

We all have been hearing that India and China are going to be the next super power, and will serve as the promising economies to the future world. Here, I wonder does this mean anything to us.  I see this as an opportunity to grow and to expand!  This growth will give birth to a whole world of innovations and entrepreneurships! The wealth of a nation is calculated with the generation of employment opportunities. And who can create this opportunity at large? Government? NGO’s?  No! – This will have to come from the doors of entrepreneurs!

Coming from an IT industry, let me highlight the impact of individuals like Mr. Murthy, Mr. Premji and Mr. Tata on this society, they have empowered close to half a million individuals directly and created an industry that India is recognized globally.

In the upscale of this economy, entrepreneurship is highly rewarding, thanks to the friendly government policies that get evolved, easy access to private funds and a positive environment created due to higher success rate. Said that, is there not an opportunity in India for Muslim community to participate and contribute to the nation’s growth through entrepreneurship?

We as a community should have a natural inclination towards business because ingredients required to make it happen comes through our faith. Interesting!  Isn’t It? Let’s look at it closely.  I believe successful business people have the following main attributes:

1.    Ability to take risks (which is thawaqqul for us)

2.    Discipline ( five times daily prayers teaches us the discipline)

3.    Patience (integral part of our deen)

Also 80% of successful business people start their day at 4.30 AM! This is, right in time for our Thahajud!Subhana Allah isn’t it amazing to see how Almighty has already addressed the worldly success in His divine guidance.

Having expressed the positive outlook of the entrepreneurship, I have to caution the associated challenges too. Less than 5% of companies sustain for 3 years, which means more than 95% close down within 3 years. Also, time and place matter a lot too. For example, 52% of computer startups founded in 1983 eventually went public, while only 18% of computer companies founded in 1985 ultimately succeeded.  In short, one need to outperform other startups founded at the same time and in the same industry.

We are living in the thick of “Privateraj” where new industries are created and jobs are multiplied with every passing day, So if you have a  pool of experience or an innovative idea why not step into the field of entrepreneurship  once at least in your lifetime !If it doesn’t work, get back to job! You would have lost some time, money, comfort etc, but surely I can guarantee, you would have gained a million dollar worth experience.

l remember Fadi, CEO of ARAMEX (First international company listed on NASDAQ in 1997) saying at Entrepreneurship summit hosted by president Obama for Muslims across the globe that, He would prefer to hire a “failed entrepreneur” over a “No entrepreneur”!

You don’t need to be a businessman to start a business. Ahamed Hasan and Ameen, two of four founders of mPower never had any business background. They started mPower in the basement of a Masjid eight years ago with absolutely no resources, Zero investment, but today Alhamdulilah Company is recognized nationally and internationally. This has been possible because of the support for entrepreneurship from leaders within the community.  A seed of good intention, nurtured with patience and perseverance results in good fruit.

Above all the need of the hour is to mould young minds and encourage them to think differently. They should be encouraged to let go of their inhibitions and actually take the plunge and tread a path that’s not yet been explored.

Truly, with economic reforms in our country, and with the virtual removal of all trade barriers, the world is now our market and our opportunity.

I would like to conclude on a lighter note, “It’s not a sin to be an employee, Halal income is what really matters”, it’s definitely not a “Fard” to be an entrepreneur but it’s a “Sunnah” isn’t it?
