Honoring Our Veterans at the Games
A special salute to veterans will kick off the Parade of Tartans during Opening Ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. “We are reaching out to all of the leading veteran organizations in the state to get them involved,” said Games Chair Isobel Bell, the mother of two veterans – Marines and Air Force. “There’s a special spirit of bravery in the DNA of every Scottish American that deserves our thanks and recognition.”
A Celebration of Identity, Heritage & Tradition
Tartan Day is kin to America’s Fourth of July. It commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, which established Scotland’s independence in 1320. Tartan was the uniform of that victory long ago, and tartan has a place in the U.S. military as well. Today, every service branch has its own tartan to mark the connection between American service and Scottish tradition, most often worn as a symbol of pride.
ScotlandShop, partner and official tartan purveyor of the Chicago Scots, features American and Canadian military tartans on its website. And the Military Tartan Company includes an example and description for tartans used by the Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.
