My name is Joe Gschwender, president of the Miami Valley Association
of Disabled Athletes (MVADA).

First I’d like to thank Mike for allowing me to participate in this
group.

MVADA was started in 1990 and was the parent organization for the
Miami Valley Rollers. The Rollers use to practice at the MVH gym until
a couple of years ago and was supported by Dr Schuster of MVH.

After playing wheelchair basketball for local teams for 20+ years,
with the help of some local parents, APE teachers, and physical
therapist in the area, we renewed our non profit status and changed
our focus.

Our current goals are to expand our current wheelchair sports
programs, and to support adapted recreation programs that already
exist in the Miami Valley including, the Moraine Minutemen wheelchair
basketball team.

We have been running a wheelchair basketball program since 1990 for
kids with varying disabilities. These kids (now mostly made up of
young adults) play on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 at Stevenson
Elementary in Riverside from October through March. This year we are
going to include other activities such as wheelchair football, soccer,
baseball, and anything else we can think of. We are working with the
Dayton Area Adapted Physical Education Consortium, and the Ohio
Adapted Physical Education Consortium to set up similar programs in
Springboro, Cedarville, Eaton, and Troy. From these programs we will
form select teams that will compete on a national level in various
sports.

We also support programs in the area for those with developmental
disabilities such as TOP Soccer, Challenger Baseball, and the new
Miracle League that was started in Springboro with the help of the
Miami Valley YMCA. On September 26th, 2009 we held an adapted
recreation event in Oakwood showcasing opportunities in the area. We
partnered with our sponsors and the programs we support and invited
kids and adults with disabilities to try out different things. It was
a success.

By now your eyes are probably tired of reading so if you have any
questions, please let me know. I also invite you to check out our
website. www.mvada.org

After talking to Mike and looking at the information on this site I
feel a partnership would be a beneficial for both organizations.

I thank you for your time.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Its good to see that Miami Valley has and association for athletes with disabilities, but this is the first time i have evr heard about the association.  i grew up around the springfield area and graduated from wright state university, have been active in wheelchair rugby and some track in college for about the last 15 years, i live east of columbus in newark now and i am involved in a variety of adaptive sports programs in thee columbus area.

i am curious, are you familiar with the Ohio Wheelchair Sports Association (OWSA)?

I think we should partner and learn more about each others organizations and see how we can grow wheelchair sports in Ohio and in other communities around ohio.

do you guys have aa membership for your association? if so, how many? do people pay an association fee? do you raise funds as an organization? are you a non-profit? do you have a website?

looking forward to learning more about the association.

thanks,

Brett Harbage

Brett:

Thank you for your reply. We've been a non profit since 1992 but the association kind of fizzled out. We reinstated the non profit status about 6 months ago.

Our website is www.mvada.org Last week we started our fall/winter recreation activities. You can find more information on the front page of our website. I invite you to our activity tomorrow. With Mike permission we added your prgram as a link to ours.

I am aware of OWSA. I just retired from a 20+ year career of wheelchair basketball with the Wright State Raiders (now the Moraine Minutemen) I've played the Columbus team several times over the last 2 decades.

Right now we are fairly small. We have a fall/winter prgram with roughly 20 kids/young adults. We are networking with the Dayton Area APE Consortium and the Ohio APE Consortium to grow our program. We also have plans to meet with the Ohio High School Athletice Assocaition in the next coming weeks. We have several partners in the area we are working with including TOP Soccer, Challenger Baseball, and other groups for those with developmental disabilities as well. I was pleasantly suprised when Mike Sutherland contacted me. I'm hoping to talk to him this week about a partnership with Miami Valley Hospital.

Our main goal right now is to start a junior wheelchair baskeball team that will include kids from Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati and compete in the NWBA.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 937-681-0823. I look forward to talking to you. I hope one day you can come check out our activities.

Thank you for your time.

Joe
