Is anyone in the UK currently using FC?

Not in the UK but I have been hacking it up since FC 1.0 came out. What's on your mind?

On the back of a concurrent thread, I was thinking it would be fun to get back into developing web apps for newer gadgets with FC. I haven't had the pleasure of working with FC (professionally) for years, but still think it has a lot going for it. With a decent architecture it would be possible to radically modify the way an app runs, depending on the type of device and/or amount of screen real-estate, with maximum reuse of application code on the D3 side. If someone out there in the UK is already using FC I sincerely believe I could do good things for them.

Mike, I've seen the great things you've done with FlashCONNECT and I think any company that can get you to work with them would be lucky - in the UK or elsewhere.

FC is really great software.  It responds to the requirements of the audience in that it's pure BASIC and doesn't require knowledge of all of the outside stuff.  It's similar to Coyote in many respects.  I think it's under-appreciated in a market (D3 and mvBase) where people seem to express the same needs over the years.

It's not in the same category as DesignBais, Viságe, O4W, or Zen where the audience prefers a GUI for UI development - then again it's very much like those products where callable subroutines help to build HTML for the UI.  And it's not in the same category as mv.NET, QMClient, UOJ, etc where the UI work is done with mainstream tools and the back-end is exclusively used for business rules.  It's really a completely different offering for a specific audience.

I think one of its faults is that it has an extensive library of callable subroutines, and I've heard some people say they get confused with all of the options.  The thing is though, you don't Need to use every function that's available, just use the ones you find are helpful and ignore the other 90%.  Another issue is that it seems RD/TL lost interest in FC when they started to sell PDP.NET.  That was a huge marketing blunder because the products are completely unrelated and address different audiences.  Even after TL stopped selling PDP.NET they never re-focused back on FC.  Maybe they think MVSP is a replacement for FlashCONNECT?  They're offerings for completely different audiences.  It's really a shame that they allow this fine software to have the appearance of "legacy-ware" - it's a (yet another) sign that TL Marketing doesn't appreciate the value of what TL Engineering produces.

While FC seems like it's somehow less powerful than other offerings, back in 2000 I wrote demos which profiled FC for use with a large variety of technologies.  I lament that a decade later people today are still asking if these things are even possible, or how such creatures might work.  Everything I have been trying to communicate over the years regarding web integration is based on the work I did with FC so many years ago - the basic principles have never changed:
(Note that TL no longer supports those demos. They haven't even setup the 'flashconnect' subdomain to work with the 'tigerlogic' domain.  It's yet another indication of how Marketing simply isn't interested in that product anymore. Such a waste.)

I would enjoy working with FC again too, but I haven't had any requests in years.  I think this is simple lack of awareness rather than any deficiencies in the product.  :(

www.all-spec.com is FC powered. I also have voice response and SMS services built on the FC pipe using Twilio. More goodies coming this year.
