Christmas came early!

I was able to make images out of my R83 floppy disks and I was also able to patch around the copyright protection and install it into an emulator.

This means that there is now a copy of R83 that you can actually play with!

I've made the instructions pretty in depth but I will be taking screenshots so it'll be easier to follow along.

I also built an image that is 25mb, you can use this directly with qemu to launch R83 or load it into the browser at https://copy.sh/v86/ (make sure to set the memory size to 8mb)

:)

Personally, I would be reluctant to download, install or run anything where copyright protection has been bypassed.  The legal penalties in the US and the potential for substantial damages if sued are not trivial.  It is also possible that in might run afoul of github restrictions on content.  Microsoft (the owner of github) has never looked kindly on bypassing copyrights.

Hopefully they see this as archival. I hope to see R83 live and be runnable well into the future. (Preferably even older versions as 1990 is still a bit recent)

With the prebuilt image, qemu-system-x86_64 isn’t happy with the format of the img file (it assumes raw) however using the web-based emulator does boot to the login prompt. Is there a default login/pw for this image?

Entering SYSPROG at the LOGON will take you in.

You can try:

qemu-system-x86_64 -m 8M -drive format=raw,file=R83-HD.img -vnc :0

Then you can use a VNC viewer to connect to localhost:5900. I haven't been able to get qemu to run and accept input directly from the terminal.

That worked!

Thank you.

I added screenshots so it should be easier to build out a R83 image.
