If you have Manager status, you will get emails to notify you that
there is a pending posting to the group. The posting will be attached
to the notification.

You can ignore this, delete the message, and let someone else process
it. There is no obligation here. Feel free to request removal from
Manager status if you don't want to receive the notifications.

Or you can read the posting, and click the "Approve or Reject" link.
This opens a web page which allows you to process multiple notes, or
to process them one at a time. To get to this page manually, just go
to the group web page, select the Management tasks link, and you will
see links for Review pending messages, Review pending members, and
Manage members.

The pending messages page shows all unapproved messages. Please
process each one individually to avoid mistakes, though on the screen
you have the ability to quickly process many all at once.

You can Reject a posting with a notification, or if it's obvious abuse
just Reject with no notification.

You can Approve a post and Allow All postings from that individual.
This is the quickest way to bring in our colleagues with the least
amount of grief. Their first post is approved after a few minutes or
hours of delay, and they are in for good. This scenario will apply to
almost everyone.

You can do the community a service simply by approving recognized
colleagues during the transition from CDP. Even if someone doesn't
post, look at the Management Tasks link on the group web page. If you
see someone you recognize, and the Posting status says Moderated, Edit
their data, and under Posting Permissions, set "Override - Member is
allowed to post", then Save changes.

Please be judicious. Do not reject anyone for personal reasons. Do
not approve anyone unless you are sure you recognize them and they
contribute productively.

Please note as well - if you flag someone for Spam their group
membership is deleted. Advertising for MV-related products or services
is not Spam. Spam is advertising completely unrelated to the MVDBMS.
If you're not sure about a specific posting, please leave it for
someone else. Only flag a posting as Spam if you know the content and
the person/bot posting it are abusive. For our purposes, we have all
seen abusive content in CDP that we know doesn't belong there. Feel
free to flag that as Spam to deter the originator.

If you don't know the person posting, leave the note for someone else
to process. In the unlikely event that none of us knows an
individual, we can Approve their current post, and I or someone else
will contact them about permanent approval.

If any given posting looks harmless, it's OK to approve that post
without setting the Override on the Posting Permissions. With this we
will simply approve all content from the member on a case by case
basis.

Managers can do the community a great service as well, simply by
filtering out spam and adult content - which occasionally get through
Google's own filters. If you don't wish to do this, simply ignore
postings and leave them for someone else - the group won't see such
postings unless they're approved, so we will get it eventually.

Please post questions here or email me if required. If you want to
test, create your own account for membership and/or send some test
notes to the group under a non-member ID. Then you can see what they
look like and process them in various ways for practice. Please just
be sure to flag the posting as a Test and put your name on it so that
no one else processes it.

Thanks for your collaboration!

Hi Tony -- Are you sure you want this to be proactively moderated rather than reacting when there are bad posts instead? That can be both a bit too much work and a bit too much delay for users in this age of instant chatter.  --dawn

Dawn, thanks for joining.

There is only a single delay for recognized members, perhaps not even
that. As soon as we see your name and address we'll approve you and
set you for no moderation. So many people won't notice the moderation
process at all, ever.

Where we don't recognize the name/handle or email address, we will
manually check a contribution, and yes there could be some delay. The
more moderators we have the less delay there will be as globally there
will be more eyes during more hours. And even if content is approved,
many members won't be approved for instant posting unless we can
verify with certainty that they are regularly productive contributors.

Yes, my personal preference is to proactively moderate rather than to
expose the group to more of the same of what we see in CDP. For
infrequent contributors the concept of "instant chatter" is a bit of
an oxymoron. I think people will be OK with sacrifice some amount of
instant gratification for an improved business environment. If this
proves to be a problem we'll make adjustments.

We will undoubtedly need to react once in a while. Until the world
comes up with better software and controls, this is the best we have.
