If you access this group by e-mail, your e-mail client should be
able to filter group postings for you in a few ways.

1) Headers include the following entire lines:
List-ID: <mvdbms.googlegroups.com>
Sender: mvd...@googlegroups.com

2) Reply-To header includes the following:
mvdbms-at-googlegroups.com

3) Subject includes the following text:
[mvdbms]

That applies to any Google Group, adjusted for group specifics,
though groups differ in how they modify the Subject.

For my e-mail, I have a folder called Lists. Under this I have
sub-folders for each list/group/forum for which I'm subscribed.
My filter looks for one of the above markers and moves mail from
my Inbox to the MVDBMS folder. I then read mail for specific
forums whenever convenient.

The following precautions should be observed for all e-mail, not
just forums. For details on filtering for any specific e-mail
reader, please consult the software provider.

1) Someone might get your e-mail address from the forum, then
send e-mail directly to you using the "[mvdbms]" tag. Don't
allow such mail to get by your anti-malware software. The
headers for mail forged like this will be different from e-mail
sent from Google.

2) Be careful of e-mail that pretends to be a forum posting.
Never reply to inquiries for your password or other personal
information. Use an e-mail client that warns you if the From
address does not match the Reply-To address - it might look like
mail is coming From X but when you Reply it will go to Y.

3) Outlook Express is an excellent threaded Usenet newsgroup
reader, and can process e-mail from groups as well. But OE is
1990's software which is a prime target for malware and spoofs
like the above. I highly recommend you use a different client for
e-mail, even if you have anti-malware software.

If you are getting spam, chances are that it's not coming from
this group. Although it is possible that some unmoderated group
member had their e-mail client compromised by malware which
auto-posted to addresses in their contact list. There are several
managers for this list and we will do our best to react to such
issues as they occur. Please be patient and rest assured that the
forum itself has not somehow been compromised. (Technically it
is possible for the group to be compromised by chances of that
are Very slim and we'll let you know if that happens.)

Finally, the e-mail address list for this group will never be
provided to anyone. If you get mail to a group address, proceed
in confidence that the address was harvested from the group and
not leaked by group management. If you are concerned about your
e-mail address being compromised, please don't use a valued
address for a public group. There are many services that provide
anonymous, disposable addresses, including GMail, HotMail, Yahoo,
and the one I use, SneakEmail.com.

Aside from issues specific to e-mail clients, please let me know
if you experience difficulties in processing e-mail with this
group.
