I know this is way off topic, but I felt it was something really important and wanted to share it.  As we or other family members, such as parents, get older, health becomes an important issue.  Within the last 2 years my own parents have gone through heart surgery and colon cancer.  I feel my own body protesting against some of the abuse heaped on it over the decades.  I'm working to correct that.

Anyway, below is a link to a really good video (9 mins) that explains the single most important thing you can do to improve your health.  It's actually something you've probably known for years, but the supporting scientific evidence given during the presentation is impressive.

Here's to your good health in 2012

Very well done! I sure would like to make video presentations as good as this, but I do not have the drawing skills and it would require even MORE sitting from me.

Even though it is OT, I appreciate the link. My poor dad sprained his ankle yesterday and his primary exercise is walking, which he otherwise does every day, so I hope he is able to get back to that soon. I'm a treadmill person (even when the weather is nice, which is a bit pathetic), but it's better than nothing. Thanks.  --dawn

HI all,

Ok, it’s probably a very good video but isn’t escaping OT postings exactly why we are moving off CDP?

Perhaps we need a separate list for OT discussions?

Just because it's technically OT does not mean it doesn't belong here.

I'm all for off topic posts, when marked (as this one) with "[OT]".

As for another group... let's not, and say we did?

Oh goodness, that's what the OT is for. One of the things that makes a community a community is permitting people to talk to each other, sometimes on OT subjects. I am happy to see them at the start of this list and to see it tagged as OT. Just my two cents. --dawn

Highly entertaining and very informative!

Becoming a gym rat a few years ago may have literally saved my life.
I'll let you know in 5 years. :)

While the majority of spam is OT, not all OT postings are spam.  Of course, this is in the eye of the beholder.

The primary reasons for this new list were to escape spam, and the (perhaps exaggerated) death of NNTP.

Considering the low volume of this list and the even lower volume of OT posts that will be found here, I wonder about the seriousness of your comment.  Regardless, I did my best to identify it so that it could be avoided if one was not interested.  I am sorry that you were, apparently, perturbed by the posting.  I am not one to post OT information with any frequency, so it should not be any type of ongoing "problem" from me.

Hi Kevin,

I am happy to go with the majority decision on OT postings.

It's good to have some of these discussions about "what this forum is about" while it's still new and we're feeling around for limits.

It looks like the consensus is that some OT content is fine.  My view is that we came here to avoid "abuse", amongst other reasons. I think occasional OT content adds flavor and color to an otherwise bland diet of geek speak. OT only becomes abuse if it's chronic - if the flavor is overpowering.

Again, we're not moderating content. Anyone posting should ask themselves if what they're posting has value to some majority of the hundred+ (hope to be thousand+) people who are going to be exposed to that content. As numbers increase, overall tolerance decreases. Measuring that tolerance is subjective and subject to error, on the part of people posting, and on the part of moderators attempting to keep the signal to noise ratio high. If we get enough comments that some form of OT content is crossing the line toward abuse, we'll respond, otherwise not.

In addition to avoiding abuse, I think we're all in agreement that we want to improve the state of the community through increased forum membership. If we lose membership in favor of OT banter we're defeating that purpose. Therefore, when faced with such a choice, we need to tend toward the greater good. (From a Star Trek movie: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.")

With postings properly labeled with [OT] in the subject, everyone has the ability to limit their exposure. Each member also has the ability to filter out postings from individuals. I'd like for the community to make use of these personal remedies before moderators are asked to make judgement calls on content.

Agreed. Just recognize that you can also gain people by making it more of a community, given that many "MultiValue folks" are not application developers and might want to keep current on trends in MV shops rather than, for example, printer codes. Others will prefer HCI discussions, others some chatter about the future or history of MV or even about database theory. While there are always some folks who will leave if some topics are not of interest to them, having more topics also does bring in a broader community. Just my two cents. Cheers!  --dawn

IMO ot is fine as long as it is labeled as such. I'd someone becomes a problem it will become obvious and we can ban them as appropriate.

Kevin,

I think that unless future video links are for sexy girls they should
be banned (sorry, I take to change badly)

P.S. JK, of course. I'm figuring that Ross is referring to Elkie's
videos since my videos only have have voice (for which you can be
thankful)
