The github site is https://github.com/stringdatabase/sdb64.
Download: git clone -b main https://github.com/stringdatabase/sdb64
or download the source code zip file from github.
-
Website: https://www.stringdatabase.com (work in progress)
-
-
The ACCOUNTS file structure has been changed in this version and breaks compatibility with prior versions as far as retaining accounts between installs.  Advanced users can probably figure out what to do to move account contents. We will be more careful about version incompatibilities after we release 1.0.0.
-
Several significant improvements in this version, especially in the admin commands CREATE.ACCOUNT and MODIFY.ACCOUNT.  For information, review the change log.
-
Also the first pull request by a third developer.  Thank you to nextjob and d-chou for their contributions to this release.

At this point we believe we have built on prior work by others and have created a core open source, multi-value database which encompasses most of what we originally intended: small core system without some seldom used legacy features, increased security for remote connectivity, review of legacy code and correction of problems found , embedded python, return of some kind of data encryption and a system where the database is an extension of the underlying operating system.  It also compiles and runs on the Raspberry Pi 5 and the Windows Subsystem for Linux.

We have reached a fork in the road  We are tentatively planning for two point releases this year and then a release of version 1.0 at the end of this year.  If we proceed, we are planning to improve documentation and the website and to continue the work of finding existing issues and areas that can be improved.  We would like to hear suggestions from interested parties as to what else they would like to see in the system.

Honestly, is this effort worth it?  Is there really any interest in a currently maintained and developed open source multi-value database?  Or is it time to admit that there is no interest and our time would be better spent in other endeavors?  If there is little interest we may continue this hobby as an intellectual exercise, at a slower pace, purely for our own enjoyment -- or just drop the project.  If others are interested and find SD to be of value, we will be motivated to be more engaged.

I would love to work with it.  Is there a website for it?  How can others get involved?

I think it is worth it, especially the way Rocket is treating commercial QM.

I would love to be more involved. Okay, I'd probably want to merge most
of your work into ScarletDME, and improve that, but equally I'd love to
see you merge anything I did into SD.

The problem being that with a disabled wife, elderly in-laws, a
full-time job, etc etc etc, finding time is an uphill battle ...

Cheers,
Wol

Understand lack of time.  Merging is good.

Yes, this project is very important. Who is leading the development?

I am, although Nextjob and I mutually agree on ideas for each release. Nextjob has been doing a lot of the programming recently as much of it involves C and Python coding, which I do not do.  I did the original fork from ScarletDME and wrote the original scripts to install and uninstall the system.  I went through all the ScarletDME C and Basic code and removed all the OpenQM branding. I handled deletion of legacy features that we did not want to support. I manage the code hosting on GitHub and manage pull requests and do some testing and QA.  Both Nextjob and I have been working on documentation. We recently got the first small pull request from a third developer.  I pay for the web site and have been doing the work there.  A complete list of changes and enhancements so far is in the change log on the web site.

One of the resources that I use the most in OpenQM are collections. The syntax for working with JSON is very simple and effective. Another widely used resource is the WEBSVC command that allows you to easily implement APIs using a simple protocol such as JSON-RPC.

Implementing COLLECTION() and the WEBSVC command would make SD a winning horse.

I'm guessing that extended character support would also be needed.  SD will probably remain a 64 bit, Linux only, ASCII 8 bit only database as major changes to the core system are probably not going to be made unless significant additional resources appear one day with the appropriate skill sets and time availability.
