Subject: A Message from your Chairman
From the Chairman's Desk
Last Tuesday, voters in Maine, New Jersey and Virginia sent their legislators a strong and unequivocal message ? that the lawmaker?s unilateral decisions did not reflect their values, concerns or priorities.
Recently, the San Jose City Council decided that it is in our best interest to ban plastic carryout bags and to tax us at the cash register for the ?privilege? of using a paper bag.
On Thursday, November 12, the Environmental Services Department of the City of San Jose? will hold a Public Scoping Meeting to obtain your input on the environmental analysis for the City?s proposal to adopt an ordinance regulating the use of ?single-use? carryout bags.
On Tuesday, November 10, the City Council will discuss banning the use of Styrofoam at events on city property with more than 1,000 people. Will the city council stop there? I think not! Certainly the food court at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose serves more that 1,000 people daily. Will the City impose a restrictive ordinance on one of the largest sales tax generators for the City of San Jose? The City has already banned plastic bags. Where will this government intrusion end? Will we sit back and let government make decisions it believes is best for us?
Let your voice be heard like our east coast brethren and insist on a ?representative? government!
The hearing on Thursday will take place at the Roosevelt Community Center, 901 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose, CA 95116 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Together, let?s stop this infringement on our personal liberty, excessive taxation and expansion of government.
Faithfully Yours,
Steve Mullen, Chairman
