Attached is a description of a Saturday daylong meeting coming up in Redwood City. The topic, generically, is how to convert El Camino Real into a Grand Boulevard, one in which every community can take pride. There are lots more details about the Initiative at http://www.grandboulevard.net/.
But the real issue is how can we blend apparently conflicting needs in a manner that builds great communities, and reduces carbon impact by reducing vehicle trips, a topic not far removed from the discussions around high speed rail.
In any case, the speakers are illuminaries and it will be great event. There is no charge, though an RSVP is required, to assure there is sufficient hand-outs and lunches.
We would love to see the place overflowing and the non-elected, noninvolved residents are the ones most often underrepresented at these types of meetings.

Be a part of the growing demand for a meaningful, environmentally sustainable quality of life.
For decades we've struggled with a shortage of housing coupled with prices that remain unreachable for many; and a declining economic base for local governments and public agencies in the face of increased demands for services in our region. Imagine the possibilities, gain valuable insight, and learn more about transforming El Camino Real into a grand boulevard and a great community!
Imagine new realities with our inspiring speakers.
Michael Freedman, an internationally renowned urban planner, will provocatively state the case for this transformation. Will Kempton, head of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the owner of El Camino, will keynote the luncheon session and speak to Caltrans' leadership in developing context-sensitive solutions for our state highways. Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and Steve Heminger of the MTC will provide the federal and regional context.
Join us on June 20 for a public forum on new choices for
El Camino Real.
Let's explore how El Camino Real can be remade into a world-class boulevard that achieves its full potential as a place for residents to work, live, shop and play - that builds links between land-use and transit and is environmentally and economically sustainable.
Please join the movement to transform El Camino and our community!
