Subject: Re: [master-gardeners] Any Mt.View MGs come support new
community garden in Mt View tonite

A woman who is organizing the presentation to the Mt View
city council dropped by PADG last week. She came to look
at the Eleanor Pardee community garden and then came to
talk to us about the situation the people in Mtn View are
facing.

A group of neighbors, spurred probably by one or a small
number of people, were talked into signing a petition
objecting to the new community garden, on grounds of
noise, dirt, smell, detracting from property value, and I think
also crime. She was interested in Eleanor Pardee community
garden as it's also completely surrounded by residential
homes and people in the neighborhood are OK with it.
She said 90 people signed the anti-garden petition.

The land is owned by the agency in charge of Hetch Hetchy
and has a pipe of some sort under it, and so cannot be
developed. Right now it is an empty lot of weeds.

There are 300 people on the waiting list for a community
garden in Mountain View (I believe that is what she said,
it's hard to believe there is such a long list) and getting
a plot takes several years.

That's all I know ... they would love to have support from
other gardeners, to help explain the benefits of a community
garden.

If there are any MGs in Mt. View that could come stand in support of
developing a new community garden in Mt. View tonite please do. I was
contacted and will be going up to speak about the positive effect that
community gardens bring to a neighborhood. At the end of comment
evryone in the audience who is in support of having the new garden
will be asked to stand. If you can stand in support it could help the
message be loud and clear to the city council. Thanks

Hi Janis,
Thought this might be of interest to your group - though don't know if a service driving to pick up diapers to compost them is any better than driving to pick up cloth diapers to clean!

EarthBaby compostable diaper service

hi everyone,
i just heard about a new diaper service using compostable diapers. they are going to do their beta testing starting next month and are looking for families in mountain view to help out. here is the info:
Hi Karla,
Thank you for your interest in EarthBaby!
Allow me give you a quick introduction to our service; We will be delivering our compostable diapers right to your doorstep and picking up the used ones on a weekly basis. Each delivery will be enough diapers for the entire week. For your 1 year old we'd recommend that you start with 34 diapers. If you need more than that, just let us know... there is no charge for extra diapers :-) In addition we will be providing compostable wipes, compostable bags and bag-closures. The bags work perfectly in common diaper bins like the Diaper Champ. Our flat monthly fee of $99 will include diapers & wipes, pickup/delivery and composting.
The composting is done in aerobic static piles at our commercial composting facility. The process includes 14 weeks of composting followed by curing for an additional 4-6 weeks. The final product of our process is a stabilized compost product that can be used as mulch, soil conditioner, or a soil amendment. Ultimately this compost will be used by farmers and landscapers in a multitude of locations where carbon and nitrogen rich soil is needed.
As you may have heard, we are gearing-up for a three month trial program that we hope to start in early August.. Our goal is to have 30-40 families in and around Mountain View participate in the trial (my business partner and I both live in MV). If you know any other parents with kids in diapers who want to make a real change in the amount of waste going into our landfill, please send them our way! We will have an informational meeting to kick off the service and I’ll send you an e-mail to let you know when and where that is going to happen. In the meantime, you can feel free to join our Yahoo group called EarthBabyMV (you can subscribe by sending an email to EarthBabyM...@yahoogroups.com)

Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
Best Regards,
Mark
