Dear Ms. Segura et al:

I’d like to complement you on your service to the community in your
providing healthy and, in some cases, local food to your patrons. It
is unfortunate that there are so few such options in Mountain View and
in the general area. Essentially, Fresh Choice, Garden Fresh, and
Hobee’s are the main choices available to us in this region.

However, there are two issues that I’d like to raise with you that
concern me, and that I hope you will be able to address.

First, it has been my experience that, even when I indicate that I
don’t want anything to drink with my meal, it is assumed by the
cashier that I do want water. Given that we are in a drought
situation, that fresh water is always a precious resource, and that
cleaning these unnecessary glasses poses an additional load on your
energy needs, you should only provide water if it is asked for. Please
note that the City of Mountain View has the following restriction on
the books:
Serving water in restaurants, except on request (MVCC Section
35.28.4.4).

Second, it is very common for folks in line to eat some of their food
while in line. Obviously, this is highly unsanitary and seriously
compromises any of your efforts to provide a safe food environment. I
urge you to post signage asking your customers not to do this for
safety reasons. I imagine that the county health regulators would
whole-heartedly agree.
