I'm in contact with folks at Echelon Corporation, and we are discussing implementing "smart," network based streetlight control/monitoring systems both in my HOA governed community (Whisman Station) and in the City (a much bigger goal, of course). One advantage for our city is that we have the Google WiFi infrastructure for communications across the system, which would defray costs for a service provider. I'm interested in hearing any of your comments on this solution, if you would like to work with me on this, and, Deb, if Google might like to get involved with the process in some way. Apparently, both San Jose and Saratoga are looking at Echelon technology, but they don't have the Google WiFi piece to leverage from, so success in Mountain View could be a first as done this way.
