I had a discussion with Doug and Jan, who manage the MV farmers
market on behalf of the California Farmers' Market Association
(http://www.cafarmersmkts.com/mtnview.html), this morning about their
interest in adding a booth for selling/distributing cloth shopping
and produce bags. Law prohibits such bags from being sold by
California Federation of Certified Farmers Market
(http://www.cafarmersmarkets.com) vendors; however, such sales could
take place at a "non-certified area" or "auxiliary area" booth.
Doug told me that they would be "very open" to this possibility, and
I told him I would follow up with a more-detailed email. He
recognizes that bags with the MV farmers market logo would be a great
promotional tool, and encouraging shoppers to use them (and cloth
produce bags) would somewhat reduce costs for plastic bags that the
vendors distribute.
He mentioned that a partnership with community volunteers would
almost certainly be an essential component, as the CFMA does not have
the bandwidth to cover such an effort. This is perfectly
understandable to me, and I'm just glad that they might be open to
providing the space and vetting the program.
By the way, Doug mentioned this as perhaps being a pilot program for
other farmers markets the CFMA manages.
So what I think is needed now from those of you on the thread is:
- Letting me know if you could be interested in helping to run/manage
such a booth during farmers market hours (if each of us could do it
for just an hour each weekend, or, maybe, on alternating weekends,
the load wouldn't be too awful for any one person).
- Forwarding any suggestions/comments that can help me proceed and plan.
- Contacting Doug (Do...@CAFarmersmkts.com) and letting him know that
you support (or strongly support!) getting this going.
Thanks in advance,
Bruce
Best,
Mike
