A sub-group of the Built Environment working group met on Friday,
April 18 to brainstorm sustainability ideas for owner-occupied homes
in Mountain View. Below are the results.

Built Environment Brainstorm Session Results

Topic: sustainability ideas for owner-occupied homes (rental homes
will be covered in a future brainstorming session).

Ground-rules for discussion: defer judgement; encourage wild ideas;
build on the ideas of others; stay focused on the topic; one
conversation at a time; be visual; go for quanity!

Ideas generated:

Recognition program, homes, neighborhoods
Phantom electric loads
Schools programs

and increase information sharing, problem solving, visibility of goals
and solutions
Mechanism for community feedback
Reversible ceiling fans
Require street festivals to meet energy standards and educate the
public about energy use

Drought-tolerant landscaping policy and education

Offer residents the opportunity to invest in local carbon offset
projects, such as energy efficiency improvements on rental or low
income housing. Make the projects highly visible to the community.

Neighborhood wind and solar power generation
Require passive solar features on new homes
BULK PURCHASES:
Bulk purchases of efficiency and renewable energy products, including
electric faucets, solar water heating, PV, attic fans.

Strict trash reduction policy
OTHER POLICY IDEAS:
Insulation in attics and floors
Fireplace inserts
Require fly-ash in concrete
At Point-of-Sale: require green points rating
Service requirements for furnaces
Low-flow toilets and shower heads
Efficient lighting
Ban incandescent bulbs
Property tax incentives or penalties
Ban plasma televisions

NEXT STEPS:
1) Have a similar session on rental homes
2) Share ideas with other work groups
3) Research more on our top ideas
