Hi all,

The AGM will be held at the Clissold Arms on Tues 24 May, starting at 7:30pm and with drinks afterwards from ~9pm.  The agenda is attached along with minutes from the previous meeting.  Feel free to attend, or to send me any feedback before or after the meeting.

It’s been an eventful season!  A round-up of the results:

1st team: the 1st team are champions of the Middlesex League Division 1, for the first time in the club’s history!  Simon Wilks led the team to a W6/D1/L1 record ahead of Kings Head, Hackney, Hammersmith and Hendon.  There were less than the usual number of matches played over the season due to the withdrawal of a couple of teams, but the top points scorers were:

Dan Hall 3.5/4

Joel Bird 3.5/5

Alecos Ethelontis 3/6

David Grant 2.5/3

Simon Wilks 2.5/6 (often playing on board 1 so a very solid performance)

Plus other contributions from a 15-player squad.

2nd team: Simon Brougham fielded a total of 17 players in his Division 3 campaign.  The division title is tbc as there are some matches outstanding, but Muswell Hill 2 currently top the table with a W8/D2/L2 record, and are guaranteed promotion to Division 2 for next year.

Top points scorers were:

Stanley Badacsonyi 7/10

Zac Cohen 4.5/7

Niall Guinness 4/5

Dominic Norcliffe-Brown 4/5

Fredrik Ceder and Sam Tombs also deserve a mention for their 100% league records, chipping in with 3/3 and 2/2 respectively.

Club championship:

I managed to score 8.5/9 to win the championship group, a rather flattering total given that many of the games were closely fought.

Group F winner: Fredrik Ceder 7.5/8

Group G winner: Mark England 7.5/8

Group H (late joiners) winner: Samuel Tombs 5/5

Blitz championship:

Last week 17 players competed in a gruelling 14 rounds (I think) of 5+0 blitz.  The lack of increment led to some crazy time scrambles, but when the dust settled the joint winners were myself and rising star Stanley Badacsonyi.

Well done to Stanley, who entered the first lockdown in 2020 with an old style ECF rapid grade of 99 (& 1200 FIDE) and has since improved to become the No.1 ranked u13 in England on the ECF rapid chess rating list, with a rating above 2100.  An amazing achievement, and it’s nice to see that he’s part of a new generation of improving juniors coming through at Muswell Hill currently.

Many thanks to Simon B for organising both the club championships & blitz, on top of his duties as 2nd team captain. Both events ran like clockwork and were good fun.

If outstanding results from the championship haven’t yet been reported to Simon B, please send them directly to him in the next few days before the AGM.

All the best

Joel
