Hi, a few updates:

Firstly, a reminder that the Muswell Hill fide rated 5+3 blitz is happening next Tuesday 20 Sep. The jotform entry link is below, and the list of entries so far is here: https://chess-results.com/tnr657350.aspx?lan=1

Middlesex League fixtures should be agreed by mid next week, with matches starting from October onwards. There will be 7 teams in each of Div 1&2, and the format as usual is a double round robin from Oct-May.

Finally, if you’d like to play in the first stage of the club championships, running from Oct-Jan, please let Simon B know by end of next week so that he can organise groups.

Let me know any questions in the meantime.

All the best
Joel

Hi,

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer.  The club will be re-convening from 6 September onwards.  The venue remains the Clissold Arms, from 7pm each Tuesday.

A brief outline of the year ahead:

September: you’re encouraged to play casual chess, welcome new members, and pay subs!  As last year, subs remain at £60 for the year (Sep-May), £30 for juniors, OR else £5 pay to play per evening.  Transfers can be made directly to the account at the bottom of this email, but please reference your name when paying.

On 20 September, we will be holding an ECF and FIDE rated blitz competition.  This will be played at a 5+3 time control over 7 rounds and is open to all, with MHCC members eligible for discounted entry.  Details are at the following link and advance entry is recommended:

https://form.jotform.com/222121933022339

Thanks to Max Pollack for organising this!

October – November:

1. League matches begin.  We have 2 teams entered in Div 1 and Div 2 of the Middlesex League, which will have matches contested over 6 boards from Oct ’22 through to May ‘23.  The 1st team enters as defending champions, and normally fields players with 2000+ ECF ratings.  The 2nd team normally fields players in the range 1500-2000 ECF although there’s some flexibility.  We may also try to arrange some non-league team matches for players newer to competition.  As with last year, I’m pleased to say that Simon W will captain the 1st team and Simon B will captain the 2nd team.  League fixtures will be posted on the ECF LMS site in due course (https://ecflms.org.uk/lms/node/24290/ofixtures).

2. Club Championships – Phase 1.  We intend to start with all play all groups at a standard time control (75+15 most likely).  This year, we may introduce one group for players who prefer a rapid time control (e.g. 20+10), so that 2 games can be completed against the same opponent on the same evening.  If you want to play in the club championships, please let Simon B or myself know by the 3rd week of September so that we can organise groups, including your preference for rapid chess if relevant.

December:

No activity apart from league away matches, due to Clissold xmas bookings.

January – April:

Club championships – Phase 2.  Format tbc but will likely consist of a championship group plus other groups.

May:

Conclusion of competitions; End of season blitz; AGM.

If you intend to play competitive chess this season, please sign up for ECF membership here:

https://www.englishchess.org.uk/ecf-membership-rates-and-joining-details/

This will avoid additional costs for rated games.  Minimum bronze membership is required to play in the league or to enter rated groups of the club championships.

Casual chess is encouraged as always, so feel free to come along to any club nights even if not playing in competitions, and you’re also welcome to invite friends to try it out – the first evening is free.  We had quite a few new players coming along last year and hopefully it’ll be similar this year.

Hope to see you soon over the board.

Best regards

Joel
