Call for Papers: Renaissance Society of America, Washington DC, 22-24 March 2012

Organizers: Janie Cole, Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Ingrid Alexander-Skipnes, University of Stavanger
Early modern art and music works, artists, musicians, composers, genres and theories - was often shaped by intercultural exchanges and transnational encounters. Patrons and artists promoted such exchanges, transforming the artistic landscape of Europe into a complex transcultural form. Papers might consider how artists, musicians, composers, patrons, musical works, theatrical spectacles, art works and performance practices crossed borders and cultures, why they did so, and with what effects, whether aesthetic, dramatic, political or social. Papers might explore the significance of national and international artistic traditions, the differing kinds of influences, intertextualities, intercultural dialogues and transcultural performance practices or the links between music and art and local or international politics.
