II UFRJ INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF MUSICOLOGY

Current Theory, Criticism and Music

Federal University of Rio de Janeiro / School of Music / Graduate Studies Program

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 1517, 2011

The intersection between analytical theories of music and theories of cultural criticism has triggered some crucial questionings in the area, not only concerning the theoretical and methodological problems brought by new approaches and agendas, but especially as it lead to a redefinition of the very identity of the discipline. The Symposium provides a renewing opportunity to discuss the extent to which innovations of the music from the twentieth-century onwards as bringing new languages, new compositional and performance practices, and new ways of listening have consisted of a primary locus of fresh analytical and critical proposals in recent developments of musicology, considering its wide range of approaches. The event will gather in Brazil prominent specialists from various countries, seeking a dialogue that may promote the insertion of Brazilian musicological studies in the international community of scholars. In addition to musicologists, the event will congregate compose
rs and performers, in order to draw together research and creative processes. The debate among experts in contemporary music seeks to expand the space for the various trends and critical analysis, encouraging a theoretical and analytical encounter that may inspire future historiography. The Book of Abstracts and the Proceedings will be freely available at UFRJ website.
