The Department of Music at the University of California, Davis invites applications for its Graduate Program in Music for 2022-2023. The program comprises four sub-disciplines of music scholarship and creative activity: composition and theory, conducting, ethnomusicology, and musicology. The Department of Music at UC Davis offers an integrated and inclusive environment where graduate students engage with a highly regarded faculty, fellow graduate students and a range of exceptional visiting scholars and Artists in Residence.
Apply online through the Office of Graduate Studies. Applications are due January 5, 2022. Further information is on our website (

All incoming PhD students are offered a five-year fellowship and teaching assistantship package from the Department of Music, providing tuition, most fees, health insurance, and approximately $23k stipend/salary per year. Other funding options, in lieu of support from the Department of Music, include a number of Internal Fellowships available to Graduate Students at UC Davis.
All Doctor of Philosophy students follow the same core curriculum for the first year of study, followed by concentrated course work in musicology, ethnomusicology, or composition and theory. Composition emphasizes analysis of Western music and music of other cultures, electronic music, multi-disciplinary collaborations, and inventive compositional methods. Musicology focuses on stylistic and critical study in all historical periods, the acquisition of research skills, writing for publication, professional development, and application of critical theory. Ethnomusicology covers critical theory, fieldwork, ethnography, transcription, and the intellectual history of the subject. All students are encouraged to take part in performance groups sponsored by the department, including a variety of ensembles in residence (UCD Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Empyrean Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Samba School, and Early Music, Mariachi, Afro-Cuban, Gamelan, Jazz, Hindustani Vocal, and Capoeria Ensembles).
