Fully-Online, Stand Alone Public Musicology Certificate at The Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University

The certificate in Public Musicology is the first such program in the nation and provides students with real-world skills, including digital humanities training. Students have the opportunity to build a portfolio of work in areas such as museum curation, grant proposals, publications, and creating editions of music that can be used for future employment.

The program launched as an in-person, embedded certificate in August 2022 and quickly enrolled at full capacity. It is now available as a fully online certificate program to anyone with 12 or more credits in music from any university, college, or conservatory.

The 12-credit program (one class per semester for four semesters) comprises four courses that teach students the basics of public-facing music history. Students residing in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are all eligible to receive in-state tuition. Applications submitted in March from any state receive an application fee waiver.

To apply, visit https://www.columbusstate.edu/admissions/. Choose Public Musicology Online Certificate in the drop-down menu. Fall 2025 application deadline for admission is June 30.

Questions about the program may be directed to the Public Musicology Coordinator and Advisor, Dr. Reba Wissner, at wissner_reba -at- columbusstate.edu.

A distinguished conservatory of music in a public comprehensive university, the Schwob School of Music, located in Columbus, GA, offers bachelor’s degrees in performance, music education, and music/liberal arts; master’s degrees in performance; certificate programs in various disciplines including musical theatre and composition; and a post-graduate artist diploma.
